Utagawa Kuniyoshi, born Yoshisaburō, was a member of the prestigious Utagawa School and one of the last great practitioners of ukiyo-e. This print comes from a series illustrating the famous anthology Hyakunin Isshu, containing one hundred waka, each by a different poet. Here, the noted waka poet Fujiwara no Okikaze, active in the early 10th century (Heian period), makes his way through the rain.
