The origins of the band Haustor reach back to 1979, when singer and guitarist Darko Rundek, rhythm guitar player Ozren Štiglić and the bass guitar player Srđan Sacher started practicing at the “Kugla glumišta”. They practiced side by side the band Azra and often borrowed their drummer Boris Leiner. But Haustor wasn’t a New Wave band as most others, given that Darko, a literature student, included theater drama into his work, appearing often with heavy makeup, quoting poems or doing pantomime, while Srđan contributed his ethnic-musical studies to the songs. Their first hit was “Moja prva Ljubav” from their first record which was released in 1981. Before they went to military service, they held a legendary concert at the famous rock club Kulušić in 1982. They were also the opening band for the Gang of Four concert in Zagreb, but some of their songs got banned regardless of their fame (as for example “Radnička klasa odlazi u raj”), given that they were classified as “inappropriate” by the government. Haustor has developed their music in many different ways, including reggae, folk and pop music, while using metaphors and symbols from literature and movies. The band members changed several times, but they performed all together for a last concert at the Dom Sportova in 1996. Darko Rundek has spent the last two decades mostly in Paris, but spends the summers on the island Brač and performs often in his hometown Zagreb.
