#kuchisake

The final single from Utsu-P's new album PERFECT PERSONA has released!

It's called KUCHISAKE and uses Kasane Teto.

Utsu-P included a note for international fans who may not be familiar with the legend of the kuchisake-onna.

(Also a bit of a not-quite-face-reveal, since the costume involves a surgical mask.)

Kuchisake, one of the Visitor enemies from Ghostwire: Tokyo, which I played over the summer and quite enjoyed. I love folklore of all kinds, especially spooky folklore, and the kuchisake-onna is right up there (I'll have to post the art I've done of one). My oldest suggested this for my costume this year, and I was all in.

The biggest hurdle was finding something for the coat, honestly. I didn't want to get a brand new longcoat just to sully it with fake blood and grime, so I did what I usually do with a new cosplay: I hit up the thrift stores to see if I could find something that would work. And while I don't have a photo of the before (because I always forget), I found a zip-up dress with a hood in a nice beige that I figured I could alter. Took off the hood, took out the zipper, removed the elastic from the pockets and resized them (plus added a taller interior pocket for my phone and my wallet), and then added a collar, button placket for buttons, longer cuffs, and belt, and the dress was now a coat. Not 100% game-accurate, but close enough to count in my book.

The scissors came from Spirit Halloween, but I had to repaint them because they were garishly clown-themed. Rustoleum primer and then dry-brushing silver acrylic paint made them look like regular scisors, and then I splattered them with the same watered-down red-brown I used to bloodstain the coat (and underskirt).

So now this costume is on my Dragon Con roster for next year (along with my Grey Warden and my Casual Commander Shepard, both of which I'll have to show off in the future).

And no, I'm not wearing this tomorrow night for handing out candy. I have a more classic ghost costume for that because it goes with my house decor.

Utsu-P - KUCHISAKE feat. Kasane Teto

"KUCHISAKE" is derived from "Kuchisake Onna," a figure from a traditional Japanese urban legend. She is said to approach passersby and ask, "Am I Pretty?" If the person answers "Yes," she removes her mask to reveal a mouth slit open from ear to ear and says, "Even like this?" Those who scream or try to run are said to be attacked by her — making her a kind of vengeful spirit or yokai.
