Book Worm Review: Desolation
Thereâs no escaping your past. Especially when it wants revenge.
Grant Marlowe hoped taking his family to their mountain cabin for Christmas would reunite them after his alcoholic past had torn them apart, but it only puts them into a life and death struggle. Â On Christmas Eve, a stranger from Grantâs past invades the vacation home and takes his wife and children hostage. His agenda is simpleâmake Grant suffer the same torment that Grantâs drunken antics have caused him. Now Grant must confront his demons head on and fight for his familyâs lives. Because this man has nothing left to lose. The only thing keeping him alive is miseryâGrantâs misery.
With Desolation, Kristopher Rufty has brought readers a tale brimming with a swirling whirlwind of human emotion. Â We see all of the horrific results of a tragic accident caused by oneâs manâs irresponsibility, from both sides of the coin. Â While Grant and his family struggle to put their lives back together we also get glimpses inside of the rage and grief stricken mind of Dennis following the loss of his own family. Â Rufty brings the horror to be found in such tragedy to a graphic and heart-wrenching life. Â
The characters are perfectly realistic in all of their flaws, as we see them in their worst moments. While Grant and his family struggle with the horror of his mistakes and the tragic results, there are also small moments of hope that life may go on. Â With Grant we have a character that although heâs trying to cope with what heâd done, even tragedy doesnât change some of the inherent flaws in his character. Throughout the tale we see moments of his inability to move beyond his own selfish needs and desires. Meanwhile, we see how Dennis is unable to deal with the reality of his loss and attempt to move on with his life. Instead, we see how sometimes the human mind obsesses and turns truly dark as Dennis becomes consumed with an overwhelming need for revenge.
Overall, this was a completely fascinating story which kept me gripped tightly in the emotional turmoil of the characters and events. Â While I definitely love my supernatural horror, there is nothing more truly terrifying than the darkness and brutality that can be found in the dredges of humanity. Kristopher Ruftyâs Desolation is a must read for horror fans!
