First Event: SoKeefe... or Sophitz?
First: Iâm sorry Iâm a bit late, but Iâm *hoping* this one-shot (fanfic) will help to cover for my mistake. If you catch any mistakes around here, please tell me!!! (my first language is Spanish... so I tend to make a few mistakes sometimes).
I ship Sophie with Keefe, but somehow this oneshot turned out to be about Sophie and Fitz. And no, I donât hate Fitz. But get ready to suffer a bit.
Without more preambles, here it is: The Storm!!
(Itâs like... 13 pages in word xD so it required this)
âThis is impossible!â Sophie grumbled.
âShh⌠donât speak so loud! I understand Tiergan wanted to accelerate our learning, but this is brutalâŚâ Fitz agreed.
They were in a table a little apart from their friends, trying to do their Telepathy homework in study hall.
âLetâs go back to the theory?â he whispered.
âOkay. Memories work as a spider web, but more intricate. Each memory is connected to others through strings.â She explained.
âThose strings are surrounded by the warmth we see when we prove minds. If the strings that are around a thought are cut, the mind wonât be able to reach it, in other words, it was partially erasedâ Fitz added.
âIt was partially erased, because if itâs not moved from its place the mind can find a way to attach it again, and the person will regain the memory.â Sophie continued.
âAlso, the memory can be attached to a new string in other place, so when a memory thatâs close to it itâs accessed, the person will recover the memory too.â Fitz saw Sophie squirm as he talked.
âDonât you think itâs a bit weird to talk like this about what Mr. Forkle did to my mind?â she asked.
âYes, but it also makes sense.â He shrugged.
âI know, and the theory seems so easyâŚâ Sophie sighed.
âIf it were so easy to see the stringsâŚâ Fitz sighed too. âWhat if we try with enhancing?â
âThat would be cheatingâ she frowned.
âBut Tiergan said that once we see them for the first time, it will be impossible to miss them again. If I see them, Iâll try to teach you how to see them too. See? If I do it, Iâll help you see them too!â Fitz smiled, his eyes glittered, and Sophieâs heart melted. How could she say no?
âOkayâ she said, while taking out her gloves. Sophie heard someone coughing hard, a bit away from them. When she followed the sound, she saw Keefe with questioning eyes. She just shrugged, and continued taking out her gloves.
âOkay, Iâll hold your hand in three.â Fitz said. âIâll open my mind to your thoughts again, is that okay?â
âSure.â
Sophie took a deep breath, and Fitz started counting.
âOne⌠Two⌠Three!â Sophie didnât expect it to be so draining. The previous times she enhanced Fitz she barely felt anything. But this time he was doing something, he had a goal.
âYES!!!â he shouted, wining a glare from a mentor that was passing by.
Can you see it now? Sophie transmitted.
Yes, but I also saw something interesting!
Look fast, this time enhancing you is using more energy. Sophie warned, and counted the seconds trying to calm herself down.
 Wow!!
Whatâs happening Fitz? Sophie asked.
He was gaping, his eyes as wide as they could.
Whatâs happening, tell me!!
Fitz looked from Sophie to Keefe, and from Keefe to Sophie.
A chime marked the end of study hall.
âDo you have all your things ready?â Fitz asked.
âI never got them outâ she answered.
âThen letâs goâ.
Fitz held Sophieâs hand and pulled her out of the hall.
âWhatâs happening Fitz?!â
âI think itâs better if we have this talk at Havenfield. And I also have to teach you to see the stringsâ
A big arm stopped them in the way to the Leapmaster.
âWait, whatâs happening? Is Miss Foster in danger?â Sandor asked.
âNo, itâs just that we need a talkâ Fitz explained.
âWhatever is happening, if it involves you Iâm in too.â Grizel added.
âWe need to go to Havenfield, now, before the others can ask anything.â Fitz said.Â
âWhy?!â Sophie asked.Â
âBecause it changes everything Sophie, and I want things to change for the better.â He grabbed her hands, looked directly into her eyes, and asked: âDo you trust me, Sophie?âÂ
âYes, of course!âÂ
âThen come with me, now.âÂ
Sophie could see he was acting weird, and also could see he was nervous, anxious. But Fitz was her friend, the boy, the elf, who found her, and she could trust him with her life.
âOkay, letâs go.â
But she had hesitated. She asked herself why she had hesitated. Maybe because they had literally ran from study hall, without even waving a goodbye at their friends. But this could be important. Maybe it was about the Black Swan. Maybe he had found an important memory Mr. Forkle had implanted in her mind.Â
And now Sophie was running, pulling Fitz to go faster.
 âSophie! Wait!âÂ
She heard Keefeâs voice behind them.Â
âWeâll be fine, weâre going to Havenfield! Iâll hail later!!â Sophie shouted at him, without stopping.
They were a few steps away from the Leapmaster now, and Keefe was too far away.Â
âHavenfield!â she shouted.Â
When they were in front of the gadget, the beam of light was ready.
Fitz, Sophie, Grizel and Sandor held hands, and Sophie stepped into the light.
âSophie!! No!!!â Sophie heard while they glittered away.
When she set foot on Havenfield, she recognized Magnate Letoâs voice. But what could be wrong with going home?
As she looked around and saw it.
 âWhatâs happening here?!â
The sky was heavy with dark clouds, the wind roaring, everything signaled a storm. As a girl who grew up in San Diego, she could recognize that was not only a little shower. That was a big storm, if it wasnât a tornado...
Sophie ran toward the fence that led to the cliff, trying to confirm her suspicions⌠until a pair of big arms stopped her.
âItâs dangerous Miss Fosterâ Cadoc was holding her.
 âCan you explain whatâs happening?!â
âItâs just a strong stormâ he said.
âThere are no storms in the Lost Cities.â Fitz affirmed.
âThen what is this?â Cadoc raised his arms as a heavy rain started.
Sophie and Fitz looked at each other, gaping.
âWhat do we do now?!â
âTo the basement!â Sandor commanded.
âDo we have a basement?!âÂ
âOf course Miss Foster, what did you think the new subterranean defenses are?â Sandor walked to one side of the house, where he raised a handle. A trapdoor opened, and Sophie could only see stairs going down to a deep darkness.Â
Sandor went down first, and Sophie didnât have to wait too long until she saw a light turn on.
âCome! Now!â Sandor ordered. Sophie didnât even think about disobeying. Fitz, Grizel and Cadoc followed her.
When she arrived to the bottom, she reached a corridor that was brightened by small crystals hanging from the ceiling.
 âWhere are you, Sandor?!â
âIâm here!â He waved from a door she hadnât seen before because of the adrenaline, and ran to meet him there.
Sophie found herself in a cozy, simple room that had a couch, a couple armchairs, beanbag chairs, and a small kitchen area in a corner.
âWhy didnât I know this existed below Havenfield?â
âMaybe because you never askedâ Cadoc answered.
âWell, now that we are in a safer place, can someone explain whatâs happening?!â Fitz demanded.
âWeâve been preparing for this day for around a month. The house and the animals were secured, the gnomes evacuated, Edaline and Grady said theyâd be out too, and it will be over in a few hours.â Cadoc explained.
âI donât understand. Fitz, you said there are no storms in the Lost Cities, right?â Sophie asked.
 âYes.âÂ
âWhy arenât there storms in the Lost Cities? In fact, I havenât seen rain in Havenfield before.â
âI think it has to do with your Elementalism class.â Sandor said.
 âWhat?!â Fitz and Sophie exclaimed.
âOkay, Sandorâs right.â Grizel intervened. âIf there are not storms, nor rain in the Lost Cities, it must be because you guys control the weather. Itâs what you guys do in Elementalism, right? You bottle all kinds of things, including clouds, lightning⌠itâs just logic. Why not control the weather?â
âI⌠I hadnât thought it that way beforeâ Fitz conceded.
âThen why is there such a big storm here?!â Sophie countered.
 âIt was programmedâ Cadoc shrugged.
âWhy didnât you know about it, Sandor?â Sophie groaned.
âI knew it, I just didnât know the exact day. In fact, wasnât it scheduled in school hours? So kids would be at Foxfire while it happened?â Sandor asked Cadoc.
âThe exact day was announced today in the morning, as well as the hour. Magnate Leto was supposed to pass the news to the students after study hall.â Cadoc explained.
âBut we ran after study hall⌠we didnât listen to Magnate Letoâ Fitz muttered.
âItâs not your fault, we didnât know.â Sophie said, trying to calm him down.
âItâs safe here, you can finish what you were doing earlier now. You have at least until night to talk.â Sandor affirmed.
âI havenât tried hailing.â Sophie noted. She tried, but this time she was out of range.
 âAnd the Leapmaster?!â
âIt doesnât work in this weather. Weâd need light from the unmapped stars.â Fitz answered, sighing.
Sophie groaned. Well, she had tried.
Sophie grabbed Fitzâs arm and led him to the kitchen area. She searched inside some of the cabinets, and found bottles of lushberry juice and cookies. They poured the juice into glasses, the cookies on a plate, and sat down on beanbags, a little apart from the goblins, who had made themselves comfortable on the couch and an armchair.
 âIâm so sorry Sophie.âÂ
âWell, donât worry, weâll be fine.â Thunder roared outside, like trying to prove her wrong. And even if they were underground, they could still listen to them. The lightning had to be very strong. She had to try to distract herself from them beforeâŚ
âSo⌠what were you going to tell me? What did you find in my mind?â
âI found⌠I donât know if this is the right moment to say it.â
The wind started to howl outside.
âPlease, if you found something in my mind, I should know what it is. Itâs my mindâ
 âSophie, are you shaking?â
âI⌠Iâve been in a few stormsâŚâ
 âAre you scared?â
âNo!â Another thunder roared, making her cringe.
 âYou donât seem so sureâŚâ
âMaybe Iâm a bit cold, IâŚâ
Fitz got up and brought a blanket.
 âThank youâŚâ
He covered her with it, and sat down close to her, keeping one of his arms around her.
 âDo you feel better?â
 âI think soâŚâ
âI remembered that I once saw humans being evacuated on TV, when I was searching for you. They were like this, covered with a blanket. I thought this could helpâŚâ
âYes, it does help. Thank you.â
A thunder rumbled again, making Sophie jump. Fitz held her a little closer.
âWe⌠we should do something to pass the time. And you owe me an explanation. What did you see in my mind?â Sophie said.
âI⌠I saw the strings. But I saw something else.â
âWhat? Is it something related to the Black Swan?!â
 âNo, itâs something else.â
 âThen what it is?!â
Fitz sighed. âThe strings are not only attached to memories in the mind, I mean, the thinking mind, but there are also strings that lead to the emotional center.â
âYeah, the place that Mr. Forkle showed us, where we trained when we lived in Alluveterre.â
âItâs⌠not exactly the same place.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âDo you remember when Keefe read that book his father wrote?â
âThe heart of the matter? Yes. It said emotions come from both the heart and the brain.â
âWell, thatâs exactly what I saw.â
âOwâŚâ
Was that really so important, that Fitz had to pull her out of study hall? Was there something else?
âIs that everything?â Sophie asked.
âIâm⌠Iâm still trying to process what I saw.â
âThen maybe if you tell me, Iâll help you process it. And itâs my brain⌠or heart⌠or⌠whatever, itâs me. I should know whatâs happening.â
Fitz took a few deep breaths. Maybe she should give him a little time?... She counted to one hundred. Then to two hundred. Then to three hundred. And she decided it was enough.
âPlease Fitz, tell me what did you see, it canât be that bad.â
âThe problem is⌠it changes things.â
âPlease, tell meâŚâ
She gave him a bit more time.
âI⌠Iâve known for a long time by now, that you like me.â
A thunder rumbled in the sky, and made Sophie shake again. Fitz continued.
âAnd I wondered why it was so difficult for you to just say it. It would solve everything⌠well, not everything, but keeping it a secret is damaging our cognate bond. Iâve been so worried, and Iâve not been able to help you lately, andâŚâ
The noise the wind made was very strong. Sophie thought it was going to destroy the house, she could almost feel how the whole house was being shaken, and shaking the place in the underground where they were hidden, or was it⌠her?...
âSophie, there was a string that led me into your heart. The string was thin, very thin, but strong. And the place where it led me was massive, and bright, and⌠it was like a shrine for all things Keefe. There was laughter, and a sense of protectiveness, and kindness, so much kindness, that it canât be kindnessâŚâ
 âFitz, stop.â
 âWhat?!â
Sophie was shaking. Hard. Her teeth chattered. She was scared she could lose one if she continued like that.
âWhat can I do to help, Sophie?!â
âI⌠I donât know, IâŚâ
Fitz got up and argued with Sandor, who covered Sophie with a bigger, thicker blanket. It didnât work.
Grizel made an herbal tea, it said chamomile. Sophie recognized that one. It helped her mom sleep. It should calm her down.
Sophie sipped the tea, slowly. Sandor had convinced her to lay down on the couch, covered by blankets. She liked the smell of chamomile, it brought her back memories of her human mom laughing, helping her sleep, or reading a book in a rainy day. It was nice.
Sophie looked around again. She saw Sandor, Fitz, Grizel and Cadoc, looking at her with worried eyes.
âHey, it was not that badâŚâ Sophie started.
âYes, it was.â Sandor said.
Fitz moved an armchair and sat down next to her.
âSophie, I understand.â He whispered.
âNo, you donât understand, IâŚâ
âYes, I do. You⌠you like Keefe, and you like him so much, but you are not ready to accept it. And you like me too, and at some point, youâll have to choose. And Iâll wait for you until youâre ready.â
âAnd what am I supposed to do now?! Now I know, and I canât just ignore what you said, but I also canât make a decision, and it hurts, because I have no chance with any of you, and IâŚâ
âSophie, thatâs exactly the problem.â Fitz got up, and paced as he spoked. âWe both like you, we have feelings for you. And we know it, and weâre waiting for you to make that choice. Donât you see?â He knelt at her side, and stroked her hair. âWe are the ones who will end up with their heart broken, not you.â
âThen⌠itâs even worseâŚâ Sophie was glad she had drank the tea. âIâm hurting you both, and Iâm not ready to do this, IâŚâ
âIt doesnât matter, Sophie. Iâll wait for you.â
A loud noise came from outside the door, like a mechanic door opening.
âIt must be someone from the Black Swanâ Sandor said. âBut just in case, get your weapons ready.â He unsheathed his sword, as Grizel and Cadoc had theirs ready too.
The door was opened, and Sophie couldnât believe what her eyes were seeing.
 âMagnate Leto?!â
âYou kids⌠you didnât listen to the announcement. You should have gone to Everglen! It was so difficult to wait a minute to go home?!â
âAt the moment it seemed rationalâŚâ Fitz tried to explain.
âIâll have to make some good excuses for coming here at this time, when I should be supervising the Elementalism final exam.â He said as he sat down in an armchair.
âWhat?!â Fitz and Sophie asked at the same time.
âWhat you are listening is Elementalism for the Elite levels. The nobility is supposed to master the elements, in case a disaster happens, they should be ready to aid the populace. Thatâs the original meaning of being a noble, to be always available to help the Elvin society.â
Fitz and Sophie gaped. Really?! Nobles were supposed to master the elements⌠like that storm?!
âWell, there are several prodigies out there, and they have help too. Grady and Edaline are assisting them.â
âThey are out there?! Are you insane?! They are in danger! I shouldâŚâ
âNo, Miss Foster, youâre staying here, in fact, they are better than you. The storm was planned, and itâs under control. If not, I wouldnât have been able to leave. But what did happen to you?!â
âMr. Forkle, I mean, Magnate LetoâŚâ Fitz started saying, as Magnate Leto held his hand up.
âMaybe itâs better if you call me Mr. Forkle now, while we are talking about this. But remember, when Iâm in this appearanceâ he pointed at his body âI am Magnate Leto. I canât change to Mr. Forkle as fast as I need it now. Remember, this is temporary.â
Fitz nodded and explained what had happened, while Sophie sipped another chamomile tea Grizel handed her.
âSophie, can I see?â she nodded. And as he explored her mind, and she couldnât feel anything as always, she focused on her tea and its smell.
Soon Mr. Forkle as Magnate Leto got up, paced around the room a few times, then sat down at Sophieâs side, and sighed.
âWhat Fitz did was not right.â He turned to look at him. âYou invaded her privacy, and told her something she was not ready to know. Sadly, sometimes knowledge changes things, and minds as young as yours must process things at their own pace. Thatâs something you kids need to learn to respect. Even if itâs frustrating.â
Sophie saw how Fitz only looked at the ground. And she didnât like it.
âBut this is my fault, I almost forced him to tell me, and I shouldnât be so naĂŻve, and Iâm breaking their hearts, andâŚâ
âI wonât say you are not partially responsible, Miss Foster, especially because you shouldnât have enhanced Mr. Vacker to do your homework easier. But also, you are not going through the usual circumstances a teenager lives, Miss Foster. The last years have being tough for you, and if thereâs someone responsible for that, thatâs me. Thatâs why I try to aid you as much as I can, always respecting your process, and your limits. I think we learned a lot about it while your parents were kidnapped. Right, Mr. Vacker?â
 âYes.â Fitz answered.
âAnd as a person who has made many mistakes, I want to give you another chance.â
 âHow?â Sophie asked.
âDo you really think you need more time, Miss Foster?â
 âYes.â
âAre you willing to forget what you learned today, so your mind can process this in the correct way?â
âBut⌠but I canât leave Fitz and Keefe feeling like thisâŚâ
âYes, and no. How do you feel now, Miss Foster?â
 âI⌠Iâm a little cold.â
âAnd youâre covered by thick blankets, and drinking a cup of chamomile, but youâre still cold.â
 âIâŚâ
âI know the storm is partially provoking what youâre physically feeling, you reacted a little like this when tornadoes stroke San Diego. Your mother always gave you a cup of chamomile tea. In fact, thatâs why there is chamomile tea in here. But it shouldnât be this much. What youâre having is called somatization. Your mind is not reacting well to this knowledge, and itâs causing the coldness you feel.â
Sophie could only answer by shaking.
âMr. Forkle, whatâs the other option?â Fitz asked.
âShe can stay as she is. She will feel cold for a couple weeks. It can change her relationship with you, Mr. Vacker, and Mr. Sencen. But what worries me more, are the mental consequences.â
 âWhat consequences?â Fitz inquired.
âItâs⌠difficult to explain, but this can make her⌠bitter. This can give her a permanent sense of sadness in her mind, and make her resentful. Maybe what Mr. Sencen does can help her, we can try.â
âBut you can erase this.â Fitz stated.
âWhat?! Please donât talk like Iâm not hereâŚâ Sophie protested.
âI wonât do it if you donât agree, Miss Foster. Do you agree to hide the memory of what you learned today?â
 âWhat?!â
âI wonât really erase it, as you learned in your Telepathy lesson, I can hide this memory and leave it in a place where you can recover it later.â
âBut Fitz, and KeefeâŚâ Sophie argued.
âWe can wait, Sophie.â Fitz assured her.
âI think I can speak for Mr. Sencen on this matter, we had an interesting conservation about this topic a few days ago, and he can wait, Miss Foster.â
Sophie gaped. What kind of conversations did they have? And why?
âWe need to decide it now, Miss Foster.â Mr. Forkle continued. âThis has exhausted you, as well and I think youâre going to fall asleep soon. Thatâs the perfect moment to hide the memory.â
âBut Iâll be able to access it later, right?â
 âYes, when youâre ready.â
âHow will you know when Iâm ready?â Sophie asked.
âI wonât know, but your mind will.â Mr. Forkle assured her.
 âHow will it know?â
âWhen a pattern of thoughts happens in your mind, you will recover this memory.â
 âAnd that isâŚ?â she inquired.
âI canât tell you, or it wonât work.â
âAnd will she be fine?â Fitz asked.
âYes, but this should be her choice.â Mr. Forkle affirmed.
Sophie looked at Fitz. He had made a mistake, as she did, and she could see how guilty he felt about it. As well as she knew how guilt worked in the elves mind. She was more worried about him than herself. Sure, Keefe could help, but she could feel how the coldness was taking roots in her mind. And if Mr. Forkle could make everything better, and take out the guilt from FitzâŚ
 âHide the memory.â she said.
 âAre you sure, Miss Foster?â
 âOf course.â
Mr. Forkle nodded. âDo you want to have a chance to talk with Miss Foster before she falls asleep, Mr. Vacker?â
Fitz nodded, and Mr. Forkle gave them some space.
Fitz knelt at Sophieâs side, again.
 âAre you sure about this?â
 âYesâ she sighed.
âWhy? Why do you want to forget this?â
âI just want another chance for us, for Keefe, to make the right decision later, for the right reasons.â
âDo you remember that we can forget memories, but we canât forget our emotions?â
âThis storm is the perfect explanation for the coldness Iâm feeling. Iâm sure Mr. Forkle will use it as an excuse for it. I will be fine, and I will remember this when Iâm ready.â
Fitz stroked Sophieâs hair, and she felt more and more relaxed. She soon closed her eyes, and as she slowly drifted to a deep sleep.
At last, she heard Fitz whisper I love you, as he pressed his lips against hers. Some of the coldness vanished, and she could, finally, sleep and find peace.
