March 9, 1953 issue of the Armed Forces’ “Newsmap” publication. “Newsmap” was a weekly issuance of the Office of Armed Forces Information and Education that was published to relay news about the Korean War and current events to members of the military and to also reinforce morale among troops. The publications feature texts, photographs, illustrations, and maps, and were designed for posting on bulletin boards or other display areas.  

This week’s issue included a feature on Hawaii’s bid for statehood. Hawaii would finally be admitted as the 50th state 6 years later on August 21, 1959, 8 months after Alaska.

Newsmap posters like this one from March 2, 1953, were printed by the Office of Armed Forces Information and Education and distributed to members of the U.S. military.  In addition to news from around the world related to the Korean War, this issue features two notable figures in American women’s history:  Lucille Ball and Tenley Albright.

Comedian Lucille Ball is pictured at left signing a lucrative $8 million contract with her husband Desi Arnaz for their successful TV show I Love Lucy.  Read more about women pioneers in the entertainment industry from the National Women’s History Museum.

Figure skater Tenley Albright is shown at right, three years before she would earn America’s first Olympic gold medal in women’s figure skating.  Since skating professionally, Dr. Albright has had an accomplished career in medicine.  For more on notable women in American medicine, check out the Changing the Face of Medicine online exhibit by the National Library of Medicine.

This U.S. Air Force B-26 light bomber of the 3rd Bomb Wing has its 14 forward firing .50 caliber machine guns tested prior to a night mission against enemy targets in North Korea. Pilots of the 3rd Wing nightly patrol Communist supply routes leading to the front. The B-26 night Intruders have been a major factor in the destruction of more than 53,000 enemy vehicles knocked out by U.S. Air Force units since the start of the Korean war., ca. 11/27/1952″
