You don't often have control over when and how you encounter new ideas for the first time, so it is always interesting to see people talk about the same concept from the different angles of how they learned about it. If you learned about something through formal education it's a fundamentally different experience than learning about it through pop culture or lived experience or even self study. It just generates some wildly different gaps in knowledge which can lead to fun conversations where your coworker who has strong opinions on the translations of classics wasn't aware of pidgin languages until they saw Arrival.
