Final User Testing
Clearly, this will not be the last time I user test this app, but I tried to fit in one big round before presenting it on Monday. Now that I have a more cohesive layout for the site, I can get better feedback.
Several users mentioned trouble with pattern input. It was minimally styled and in one long form, so it felt a bit tedious. I would like the form to feel easy and (if possible) enjoyable to incentivize users to add to the library. The source name and title was a little confusing. Users were not always sure what to place in this section. It was very awkward trying order it with the rest of the information.
I placed a couple fake links into the app representing other functionality I want to include. I used this to see if users clicked on them, and when people did I asked what they expected to happen. This helped me re-evaluate the architecture of the app.Â
Some changes I made were dividing up the form into 3 numbered sections. I created a dynamic section at the top for citation so users could select if they found or wrote the pattern. I think this got the idea across better, but it could be more refined.
I think users are interested in interacting more with the patterns. There are currently no calls to action on the pattern pages, and users are not engaging much with the CTAs in the header. I would like to reconsider how people get to different pages and different interactions. There is a careful balance of showing and hiding functionality, which I hope to experiment with more in the future, but I am happy to show the app as is for Monday.
Before Monday I would like to keep polishing the design. There are a couple bugs I am hoping to fix this weekend, but I would like to focus on presenting the app as a work in progress and highlight the potential.Â

ravelry has a really awesome mobile site? if you dowload this other (free) app, aurigmaup, you can even upload photos to your pattern pages from your mobile device, which is pretty neat!
Hmmm… I didn’t know Ravelry had a mobile site—all the times I’ve gone to it in my phone, it’s always taken me to the full site! I might have to look for the mobile version next time, as it would make searching so much easier. Thanks!

You can search a bagillion patterns with the Lion Brand app. I have it on my phone.
I did get the Lion brand app, but was rather disappointed in the lack if sweater pattern results that I got—maybe I’m not putting in the right parametres?
30 DoK Day 29: Do you have any tips, or things that you’ve learned from knitting?
Here's one: just because your row counter is designed to work in base 10 doesn't mean you have to use it that way! Once I get up above 5, if I'm repeating something more than 12 times I have to actually think about what the next multiple is (134...is that a multiple of 8 or is it 136? *Calculate, calculate...*) so for repeats of 6-9 rows, I turn my row counter like this:
01 02 03 04 05 10 11 12 13 14 15 20 (a 6-row repeat)
Counting five rows, then the sixth one resets the row counter and adds one to the "repeat iterations" counter i.e. tens column. It was a bright day when I figured this one out! Of course it doesn't work very well with those adorable click counters, sadly.
In related news, I tried out a few electronic counter apps for my iTouch before I found one I was satisfied with. The thing is, I understand why physical counters are made to work with the system of 10. It's the most flexible way to do it since we all count in base ten and most of us know our times tables. But with an electronic counter, there's absolutely no reason I shouldn't be able to tell it I never want it to count above 8, or 12, or 3. So why did the first few counter apps I tried out lock me into 10s? The one I eventually bought is called Knit Counter, and it allows you to have multiple counters going at once, which you can set with a maximum and also link to other counters so that, for example, you can set up your Row Counter so you click it every row, and once it gets to 6 it automatically increases your Pattern Repeat Counter by one and resets itself to zero. Or you can have it increase your Pattern Repeats every six rows without resetting to zero if you want! It's a great little program.Â
