FRIDAY FLASHBACK—This week’s Wayback Machine episode is prompted by Monday’s news flash about a flying car, completing a first-ever test flight between airports in Slovakia, taking to the skies and landing in 35 minutes. According to company that created it, Klein Vision, the flying car completed its 142nd successful landing. With a click of a button, the aircraft turned into a sports car in under 3 minutes – and it was driven by its inventor, Professor Stefan Klein. Rewind to 1999 when (then) high school students in the band Bad Light Project asked a perfectly legitimate question in song,:“So It’s the Year 2000 Where’s My Flying Car?”—recalling T-Bone Burnett’s lyric, “Science fiction and nostalgia have become the same” + devices in the original “Star Trek” TV series are now common, but we still can’t beam up. I produced and played on BLP’s debut album, which got some airplay and media buzz. The band was the brainchild of frontman Ron Fleeger, who was workin’ hard as a singer-songwriter. One day I was standing in Rockstation Records music store in Williamsport PA, watching teenage girls eagerly buy up Ron’s tapes. I thought, “That guy must be on to something.” Over the years I watched Ron and his music morph through eclectic styles (from metal to Celtic-tinged alt-folk), and I’m glad to report he’s still at it…and his wish may come true, just 20 years later…
