Tbh one of my favourite aspects of phantom thief stories are not the thieves themselves, but their collaborators. In shounen/shoujo animes with teen protagonists, these are mostly parents/adults, but sometimes also peers of the thief.
Sometimes the thieves do all the planning by themselves, sure. But some of my favourite examples of the non-thief ones would probably be Jii and sometimes Akako from Magic Kaito, and Daisuke's family from DNAngel.
I guess those characters appeal to me, because they somewhat remind me of a stage crew. They're responsible for setting up all the minor and major details the "audience" won't see, like information gathering, planning escape routes, getting the tools neccessary for the heist, and sometimes even setting up distractions for police and private detectives. While the thieves themselves get all the attention, like actors would, their crew do their job best when nobody even notices they exist.
They both are responsible for the crime, but their collaborators are hardly ever mentioned, even though they sometimes are the force behind the thieves. Often times they're the ones training, brainstorming, and driving the thief.
And I love that so much. I love this comeradery in crime.

I’ve managed to get YouTube to keep recommending me KKJ fan content. This is awesome and I just infodumped about chiaki and Maron and genuinely fansqueeled. I love them so much they’re so real and depressed and run into each others edges and they struggle to communicate and they struggle to get through fully bc both of them have lifetimes of betrayal and loneliness!!!!!! They love each other messy and confused and walking safety tightropes navigating uncertainty and trust!!! They’re so real!!!! Aaaaa!!! The hesitation, the eyes darting, painful considerations and the pleading stares and begging words!!!! I love insecure dorks ordained by god to contain corruption!!! The depths of daily life futility contrasted with holy mission obligation!!!!! The way he’s terrified to proceed with her but also terrified of making her think he doesn’t care and how frustrated he is with himself at his own powerlessness to reveal anything!!!! Her cautious approach and sensitive self constraining and easily emotionally startled nature and the strong protective layers around her heart that have become a cage of fear!!!! They’re so imperfect and both of them cry when they try to drop any act!!! I love them so much my precious phantom thief chance lovers!!!!
Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne! Fanart for one of the first anime’s I’ve watched.
