She was restless that night, the bed far larger than she was used to, and consequently she was quiet at the breakfast table, pushing her toast around the plate and not really eating it. Â Gold watched her over the rim of his coffee cup, speaking quietly to her about what he planned to do that day. Â He poured her more coffee without her having to ask, and by the time they ventured out to go to the shop she was feeling a little more alert.
He had suggested that they walk, given that it was a fine day, if cold, and she was content to stroll by his side in silence, the winter breeze chilling her skin. Â The few townsfolk they passed shot her curious looks, and she blushed a little as she recalled what he had said. Â What they were thinking of her. Â And of him. Â Gold merely nodded to those they passed, and she noticed that his eyes narrowed if anyone crossed the street to avoid him. Â
âI imagine they donât have the rent,â he said, when she mentioned it. Â âOh, Iâll get them later, worry not.â
He shot her a toothy grin, which she couldnât help countering with a roll of her eyes. Â It seemed to amuse him. Â
Once inside the shop, he led her into the back room, lifting a large trunk onto the workbench there and stepping back with an expectant look on his face.
âWhatâs this?â she asked, and he shrugged a little.
âI thought you could do with something else to wear,â he said. Â âIâm afraid Storybrooke isnât exactly overrun with designer outlets. Â I could take you shopping at some point, if we can find the time and inclination to leave town, but see if thereâs anything in here that you could use in the meantime.â
Belle opened up the case, and he left her to it, walking through to the shop as the bell rang to indicate a customer. Â The case was filled with folded womenâs clothing, and she pawed through it eagerly. Â Some of it could have been made for her; there were tiny skirts and dresses perfect for her petite form, and even some shoes that would fit her small feet. Â She laid out what she thought would suit, and looked around, spying a painted silk screen that was propped in a corner next to a pile of old trunks. Â Snatching up some of the clothes, she ducked behind it, and stripped off the jeans and shirt she was wearing, slipping into one of the dresses and pulling it up.
âBelle, could you just..?â Â Goldâs voice cut off, and she peered over the top of the screen to see him watching her. Â âWhat are you doing?â
âChanging,â she said. Â âCould you zip me up?â
He blinked, but then nodded, walking over to the screen. Â She turned her back, sweeping her hair out of the way, and felt his hands on her waist, stroking over the grey wool of the little dress.
âIt suits you,â he murmured, and she felt his fingers grip the zipper, pulling it upwards. Â One hand rested on her shoulder, and he turned her to face him, Belle letting her curls fall back around her shoulders as she smiled up at him.
âPerfect fit,â she said, running her hands down over her waist.
âPerfect,â he echoed, and took a step back. Â âYou look lovely, Miss Marchland.â
âDonât call me that!â she said sharply, and sighed at his stricken look. Â âIâm sorry, itâs just - that name - I donât want to hear it. Â Ever again, if I can help it. Â Could you just call me Belle?â
âOf course,â he said, after a moment. Â âForgive me, I wasnât aware you had such an - aversion - to your true identity.â
âNot your fault.â Â She realised that she was hugging herself protectively, and let her arms fall. Â âThank you for the clothes.â
âWell, they look better on you than on me,â he quipped, and she giggled.
âTry the shoes,â he added, gesturing to the case with a twirl of his fingers. Â âIn fact, I have no objection if you want to try everything on twice. Â Rentâs been collected for the week, so today should be quiet.â
He sauntered back out, and Belle slipped a pair of heels on, turning this way and that before an old mirror. Â After months of travelling in battered jeans and dusty boots, it was good to feel more like her old self. Â The fact that he thought she looked lovely had no bearing on the matter, of course.
