For me Kirk Windstein is Santa Claus 🎅🏻
CROWBAR - TIME HEALS NOTHING (1995)
nola sludge metal
.
crowbar are my favourite band, and "time heals nothing" is, in my opinion, their best work. the band refined their sound at this point, masterfully combining the dreadful nature of sludge metal with elements of hardcore, alongside gut-wrenching songwriting. the album explores grief and loss through vulnerable lyrics, which combined with the suffocating atmosphere, takes us into the deepest, darkest corners of kirk windstein's mind. i'm always going to be grateful for crowbar's music - this band sincerely changed my life, and this album played no small part in that.
.
2008 numbered reissue (214/2000). signed by kirk at their most recent show in manchester. couldn't scan the disc because it is just plain mirror material - enjoy this dumb collage from the booklet instead

Friday, December 19: Down, "Pillamyd"
Although Phil Anselmo would never admit it, Over the Under was the closest he ever came to expressing some amount of contrition for his actions. Even the harder and more rousing tracks came with notes of reflection and some regret, and the then-sober Anselmo emphasized the bluesier side of his growl and came off like a doom metal David Coverdale. Of course, “Pillamyd” also stormed with Pepper Keenan’s crushing riffs and Jimmy Bower’s canonfire drumming so it was rather easy to get smothered in Down’s attack and not pay much attention to the singer outside of savoring how his howl meshed seamlessly with the crushing wall of sound. But the track also benefited from a more focused Anselmo not badgering everyone with increasingly tiresome odes to his own resilience and toughness, and for the first time in a long time his voice carried real weight.
