Ah yes Subaru. Because flipping somebody off totallyyyy isnāt sending mixed signals when you refer to the person you flip off internally as āhandsomeā when you do so.
Ahem. Now. I ponder something. Would Julius even know what the middle finger gesture means?
The only other time Subaru employed it I can remember is against Elsa infront of Reinhard in LN 1 but Reinhard didnāt make it clear via his face or verbiage whether or not he understood what the gesture meant.

Now that I think about it more, I really do feel like Subaru was almost wholly justified in arc 3. Emilia thinking Subaru was getting hurt solely because of her is a character flaw rather than kindness really, it demonstrates self-centeredness. Subaru saved the kids not bc of her but bc he wanted to save the kids and is a good person. She also downplays Subaru dealing with the witchbeast incident when he calls himself the village's hero jokingly, when it's literal truth that Rem, Ram, and the villagers would all agree to
Subaru's insecurities mostly feel artificial and stemming from his camp treating him like fodder and disrespecting him most of the time, and Emilia's thing with promises is also a character flaw. Isn't Emilia the entitled one here, thinking she can just indulge in Subaru's kindness while not respecting and listening to his wishes properly or treating him like an equal? Subaru also didn't really have a choice not to accept the duel with Julius, and we have Ferris even enjoying it and I'm like... this is just the author hating Subaru right?
And right afterward Emilia blows up in his face while not even allowing him to clear his head, the way she behaves as if he went ahead and fought Julius and not the other way around, she comes off as using might makes right logic here, as though Subaru was this stranger kid who showed up last week or something. And it's not like Subaru actually embarrassed her, in fact she only made herself look somewhat worse with the Puck threat, and Subaru had to humanize her and single-handedly accomplished what the Emilia, Puck, Roswaal trio couldn't
She somehow treats merely leaving him behind at Karsten manor as repaying her debts, if she actually had resolve to permanently end the relationship you'd think she'd give him money or something, after he leaves the manor, but she is not thinking ahead at all. I don't get it, I feel like arc 3 was wholly a gaslighting session and Emilia herself was a horrible person until Subaru confessed to her and she broke the Puck contract
Forgiveness isn't even Subaru's trait, because to forgive someone one must acknowledge they were wronged, but Subaru doesn't even do that. Why must he apologize for her messing up, her not handling or even knowing about the Witch Cult? Aristocracy corruption matters in the story insofar it let the author punish Subaru, even Felt isn't mad at Julius, when she of all people should be. It's like literally Subaru is right, exactly as Typhon said, he is sinless but thinks himself a sinner, and Emilia did take him for granted, not take him seriously enough
The issue here is Emilia doesn't acknowledge this, Tappei retcons future and past Emilia, both of which are inconsistent with LN 4 Emilia and her behavior. Emilia is not the kindhearted goddess the narration or author makes her out to be, she's kinda twisted in her own way, and somewhat sociopathic when it comes to Subaru
She shows zero emotion toward Julius for how he hurt Subaru, or has zero thoughts about the royal guard, until arc 5, I'd say she was a rather bad person like Rem (though nowhere near that extent), and it's Subaru who changed her for the better. Subaru's suffering comes down to having attachment to Emilia camp which simply did not deserve the poor guy, chiefly Emilia
When she doesn't say a thing or two about Subaru's show of loyalty in the throne room, Julius's rant, or his actions, she's implicitly acknowledging many things that lower Subaru's self-esteem, she goes so far as joking about it, plus there's the Kiritaka scene where he throws a bomb at Subaru. It's like Subaru's status is simply not real, he is basically so weak it enables the author to use him as a punching bag
And how is Emilia so impatient that she can't see Subaru having a heart attack and clutching his heart during their fight? She herself knew he looked like an abandoned child, and I think the simple fact she averted her face shows she was in the wrong
I donāt think the correct takeaway is that Subaru is almost wholly justified during Arc 3 despite my probably unusual amounts of grace I give Subaru in that Arc compared to the rest of the fandom takes I have seen of him during said Arc.
There are things where I def think Subaru shouldnāt been as out of the loop as he was given he was most certainly a member of the Camp (and had earned his place there given Arc 2ās ā¦everything) but it still imo doesnāt exactly make Subaru justified to have basically continued to have fucked up in terms of his later interactions w/ the Candidates in the Arc even if my analysis of said moments gives a lot of context as to why Subaru acts the way he does unlike the typical pure repudiation of Subaru most typically go with.
I do think the Throne Room debacle is something much more debateable I guess on if he was right or wrong in some aspects? Since some of what Subaru says is undeniably correct, but some of it also was just him wanting to jab back at Julius too and wasnāt exactly coming from that intended place of wanting to state factual things that were his truly held convictions but rather to irk Julius.
As for Emilia. Itās not self centered at ALL imo for her to have thought she was the reason Subaru got hurt. Because objectively speaking, everything from post Arc 1 onwards from her POV is very reasonable to think this. Afterall, Subaru wouldnāt even be in the situations he was in Arc 2 or during the Conference if Emilia hadnāt taken him to the Manor.
From a meta standpoint too she is absolutely correct aswell because well. Legit everything up in the story up until that point where Subaru suffered was her fault in some sort of way. An example is such as Subaru staying up in the first to watch over the Manor to make sure Emilia would be fine and then that leading into the Rem torture.
Obviously Emilia doesnāt intend to hurt Subaru buuuuut. Undeniably her mere existence as a force for Subaru to gravitate towards does.
The Kiritaka thing is something I think is bad in general from all the Camp Members. My only explanation for it making sense the way they do act is cultural standards due to healing magic as I analyzed in that scene.
As for Emilia leaving behind Subaru at Karsten Manor. That totally making sense? I really donāt feel she needed to have given Subaru some money as she cut him off from her. She basically did repay the debt she believe she had to Subaru (obviously unknowing of how he has died for her) via getting him extremely good healing (when she couldāve gotten a decently skilled Healer that could cure the Gate but instead she got the Blue) and curing what wouldāve been a lifelong disability for him.
If Emilia wanted too, she very easily couldāve not let Subaru stay at Karsten Manor for healing and just chuck him to the side and thatās it. Sure sheād have lost what she gave up in exchange to the Crusch Camp to get that deal arranged but she couldāve still done it.
As for the whole sociopathy Emilia thing, nah I canāt get on that train. Legit as soon as Subaru awakens in LN 4 she is clearly concerned about his wounds (though she doesnāt explicitly say it) and then asks Subaru what he was feeling during the incident and allows Subaru to explain himself and then that led to Emilia thinking Subaru being around her caused the issues for Subaru.
That doesnāt read to me as some absence of care regarding Subaru. Instead of Emilia blaming Julius for any part in this, she basically believed she was at fault for this all and thus thatās why she doesnāt think negatively of him or the guard.
Because, if you are at fault, blaming others would be the wrong thing to do. And that is the mindset Emilia is operating under I believe. A mindset that is also consistent with her low self value of herself.
Iām surprised Subaru didnāt think of being teleported at the Sanctuary via the crystal when seeing this blue light envelop him.
Aside from that, eugh. I personally know Kiritaka is a decent fellow but I dislike this whole āmyā thing when talking about Liliana.
I get Liliana does clearly reciprocate his feelings but Kiritaka doesnāt know that so from his POV of what he knows, Kiritaka is forcing that kind of possessive label unto her with 0 regard for what she feels about what it implies about their relationship.
Oh nice so the guy I thought was Dynas in that Arc 2 Liliana SS is indeed confirmed to have been. There was never any explicit confirmation within the SS itself despite my deductions making me think Dynas was there.
Besides that on Dynas, smh the excusing of Kiritaka launching a bomb at Subaru is still irksome to me. Dynas does appear to be genuinely remorseful about it but still the way he addresses it feels very wishy washy to me given his employer did basically chuck a bomb at someone.
Also. Said someone is literally the personal knight of a Royal Candidate which like. HELLOOOO? That is 100% grounds for Kiritaka to have had his head go bye bye reasonably.
Kiritaka is very lucky that Emilia isnāt the kind of person to order him executed + Subaruās self loathing kicking in at the end here to blame himself for this all where he wonders why heād even come because surely heād not have been helpful in negotiations, when initially legit all Subaru wanted to do was be at the negotiation silently to support Emilia and that was it.
LOL Al really out here telling Subaru to not be so worried about the other council members blabbing and then trying to make it seem natural and not like he killed them all. What a guy.
Anywaaaays. Subaru at the end here surmising the Archbishops aināt working together because of how egotistical they all are is great how even Julius is convinced of that reasoning which seems so flimsy on the surface.

The banter on this meal thing is a nice addition to this scene. Also. Anastasia calling Felix Ferris is a bit of eyebrow raiser. Is this a Yenpress fuckup or does she actually use that more intimate name to Felix?
I guess if Anastasia does do that it is probably due to just going by how Felix prefers to address himself and her taking his desire like that into account.
Even if Anastasia has picked up on some concerning undertones to the femininity Virtuousness Before the Theatre showcased.
EDIT: I screwed up believing Anastasia was the one saying Ferris here, but my analysis still applies since she will order Felix using the name Ferris to get Mimi & Beatrice out when sheās using the emergency ladder on the side of the building.
Gods I feel so bad for Subaru. Dude did not ask for THIS and Liliana completely and utterly deceived him too + is shifting public perception on what Subaru said to entrap him into something he didnāt willingly choose.
Itās such a consistent trend for Tappei to have these underlying portions in the story showcasing a lack of consent & autonomy Subaru has for himself in comparison to others. I really appreciate how he just weaves that nasty thing into everythinnnn Subaru does.
