Death of Sibylla, Queen of Jerusalem: A Tragic Loss During the Crusades
On July 25, 1190, Sibylla, Queen of Jerusalem, died during the Third Crusade, leaving the Kingdom of Jerusalem in a deep succession crisis. The daughter of King Amalric I of Jerusalem, Sibylla became queen in 1186 alongside her husband Guy of Lusignan, just before one of the kingdom’s greatest disasters—the defeat at the Battle of Hattin and the loss of Jerusalem to Saladin.
Sibylla’s reign was marked by political turmoil and the struggle to defend the Crusader states. After the fall of Jerusalem in 1187, she remained a symbol of resistance, supporting Guy during the Siege of Acre. Her death from illness during the siege brought an end to her claim to the throne and weakened the position of her husband, as rival nobles questioned his right to rule.
Though her time as queen was brief and overshadowed by conflict, Sibylla played a significant role in the turbulent history of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. Her death changed the course of the Third Crusade and helped open the way for new claimants to the throne, including her half-sister Isabella I.
