"When we’re kids, our parents tell us the world is our oyster and we can do anything we want when we grow up. We’re told we have no limits, that we’re unique, that if we put our minds to it and don’t let anyone stop us, we can do anything.⠀ ⠀ They were telling the truth.⠀ ⠀ Yet, 10 years later, we’re told to listen to our teachers. We're told to trust our guidance counselors. We're told that college is ALWAYS a good investment. We're told that good grades are the key to a successful life. ⠀ ⠀ The problem? THEY LIED. ⠀ ⠀ I’ve gotten hundreds of DMs from high school students over the years who have had big ambitions and a lot of curiosity, but were being held back by their parents and teachers to be realistic. Their guidance counselors talk them out of Ivy League schools so that their “first choice” college is “safe” (aka so that the high school gets a higher ratio of students getting into their first choice). ⠀ ⠀ So what do they do? They go to school, put themselves into crippling debt to get a degree, and then are expected to enter (and succeed in) the worst job market in years (because of the greed of their parents’ generation) with an economic landscape that is changing more year over year than it did over decades for their parents.⠀ ⠀ And yet, they get blamed for their failures. They are called lazy, stupid, ‘obsessed’ with technology, moochers, & burners. Instead of getting support, they get vilified for not succeeding in a world that the generation before them ravaged.⠀ ⠀ It makes me sick & reminds me exactly why #SecretEntourage and the #SecretAcademy exist.
