shale was part of a shipment of clay men to london to be used as dockside labor. they were caught in the middle of a dockside riot (similar to the battle of wolfstack docks) and narrowly escaped being thrown into the zee by a couple of dockworkers. they were eventually trained by a rev-aligned silverer who believed that as a being partially born from dreams, they would have a natural affinity for parabola. also the guy who rescued and sort-of-adopted them became a seeker and they were almost a st. cerise's sacrifice but that's another story
thass was created in flute street shortly after the fall to interact with london's upper class. she was given outdated info about fourth city society and thus failed miserably at her role, eventually neglecting her task to hang out with more tolerant bohemian circles. she eventually fled west to join a commune of rubberies that had also left london. this was also where she learned the shapeling arts. eventually, the flukes discovered the commune and sent a beast of axile to massacre everyone involved; thass only survived by running away and pretends not to feel massive amounts of survivor's guilt
they met through a mutual friend: electra, a clay woman who works as thass's assistant and was in the same shipment as shale. they hit it off and eventually founded the unfettered alliance, a loose collective of various nonhuman revolutionaries intended to protect them from the prejudice of their human counterparts
