Kyra Rini is the only person living on the Greek islet of Kinaros. And although the 75-year-old woman only runs into another human every other week or so, when mail and supplies are delivered, she still insisted on getting a Covid vaccination.
And so she sent a message to Lefteris Karaiskos, the mayor of nearby Greek island Amorgos, according to the Greek Reporter, who immediately sent a vaccination crew on the "post boat" to carry out her wish.
The trip itself, which normally takes 1 1/2 hours, took 4 1/2 hours because of bad weather, but Rini was able to get her shot, and besides a sore arm, didn't experience any side effects.
Rini, who grew up on Kinaros, lived there with her husband (they were the only two residents on the islet) until 2013, when he died. Which left her — and her animals — the only residents left.

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou visited the remote island of Kinaros, where she met with its only inhabitant, 74-year-old Eirini Katsotourhi, known as Kyra Rinio, on Wednesday.
Located in the west of the islands of Leros and Amorgos, Kinaros is the second western-most island of the Dodecanese after Astypalea, and its coastline measures only 4.5 square kilometers.
“In a way, Kyra Rini symbolizes this year’s Christmas in a relevant way,” said Sakellaropoulou, referring to Katsotourhi in a traditional address form, “she lives alone and is courageous.”
The president noted that “this is what we are asked to be like, under these unique circumstances” in the pandemic.
“I have been in quarantine for many years,” Katsotourhi had quipped earlier, according to the president, who expressed her best wishes to all Greeks from a remote corner of Greece.
Eirini Katsotourhi was born on the niegbhoring island of Amorgos and moved with her parents to Kinaros at the age of 3. When she got married she migrated with husband and children to Australia.
The couple returned to Greece in 2000 and settled on Kinaros. Rinio’s husband passed away three years later, but she decided to stay there alone with her animals.
She has a satellite phone and a TV and her supplies come once a week with a subsidized boat from Amorgos. When the whether is bad and the sea very rough, the boat may stay away even 20 days.
Kyra Rinio takes care also of the monument of the Fallen Naval Officers.
After the two-hour on Kinaros and the chat with Kyra rinio, President Sakellaropoulou visited the monument and then returned to Athens.

A video was released on Saturday by the Hellenic Air Force (HAF) showing the operation that took place on Friday on Kinaros to bring supplies to the sole inhabitant of the islet, Irene Kotsatourchi.
The video was uploaded on Facebook by Greece’s Minister of Defense Nikos Panagiotopoulos, who noted in his post that ”Food distribution and electricity restoration operation [took place] on Kinaros, where the sole resident is ‘Kyra Rhinio,’ whose home always has the Greek flag raised.”
The Air Force personnel took advantage of the better weather conditions to bring food and supplies to the elderly woman who lives on the island all by herself.
It is noted that Kotsatourchi was believed to be missing, after all communications were lost with the islet of Kinaros, due to extremely bad weather, between Monday and Thursday.

Greek search and rescue teams are trying on Thursday to locate an elderly woman, the only resident of the islet of Kinaros in the Aegean sea, after she was gone missing for three days.
74-year-old Eirini Kotsatourchi, Mrs. Rinio as she is affectionately known, was last seen on Monday when a small boat brought supplies to the islet from the island of Amorgos.
Kotsatourchi was living alone in the island after her husband Nomikos Kotsatourchis died in 2013. Her only contact with the outside world in the winter months was the weekly arrival of the boat from Amorgos bringing essential supplies.
