The fishermen of Amorgos island have unanimously agreed - a first for a Greek community - to set periods of banned fishing activity in certain areas of the island. The plan aims to boost the sea life and increase the fish populations. These benefits for the biodiversity in the area are expected to make fishing sustainable and more prolific for the traditional fishermen in the island, who have been struggling the last years with a lot of competition and decreased fish populations in the sea due to the uncontrolled excessive fishing.
The struggles of the last years had made the younger generations consider abandoning the island in pursuit of a different career in the service sector. Now, a lot of young people are waiting to see the results of the project in order to decide whether it’s worth it to follow the tradition and hop in the boats of their fathers and grandfathers.
Such a project that combines environmental sensitivity with longterm sustainability for a common traditional profession, initiated and managed by a unanimous local community, is certainly a rare if not unique sight in Greece.
