Here Comes Everybody
Chris Killip's Irish Photographs
Chris Killip
Thames & Hudson,London 2009 , 96 pp., with 78 four-color and 43 black-and-white reproductions.
euro 25,00*
‘Here Comes Everybody’ is a phrase that echoes through James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. It aptly captures the intense poetry of this new collection, taken over repeated trips to Ireland between 1993 and 2005 on each of which Killip attended the annual pilgrimages at Croagh Patrick and Máméan, places of wild beauty and ancient spirituality.
His poignant photographs are a personal reflection on the contemporary pilgrims’ journey, and are complemented by landscapes, townscapes and details photographed in the west of Ireland and beyond. They include the first colour photographs Chris Killip has ever published.
Chris Killip is one of the most influential photographers, curators and teachers ever to have come out of the United Kingdom. Today he is Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University. He has previously published four books of his photographs: Isle of Man and In Flagrante, both with texts by John Berger; 55, text by Gerry Badger; and Pirelli Work, text by Clive Dilnot.

The Diatomist by Matthew Killip (works by Klaus Kemp)
Another cross-project Transcription Center connection here for Transcribe Tuesday. Last week we highlighted the connection between David Crockett Graham & his Chinese bumblebees and now we're on to Ellsworth Paine Killip!
This week, #volunpeer siobhanleachman discovered the Croton specimen sheet label she was transcribing related to field notes by botanist and collector Ellsworth P. Killip - and then shared the journal page with us.
This week's Transcribe Tuesday field note entry is a completed set of entries from Colombia in 1944 and can be downloaded from the project page. Even better, the quote above relates to THIS specimen sheet label:
We think it's pretty cool that you can not only transcribe scientists' field notes in the Transcription Center, but also tackle the botanical specimens sheets labels they created while in the field! Try these two projects from the Department of Botany and learn more about Croton. The field book is part of the Field Book Project and is shared by Smithsonian Institution Archives.
Each week, on #TranscribeTuesday, we share work created by digital volunteers in the Transcription Center. Which project should we highlight next?
P.S. You might remember this expedition in one of our Friday Final Lines - Killip ended the Colombia expedition with a landing in Miami.

Yesterday I went to The Photographers' Gallery with my cousin Ciaran, I never once went to this gallery beforehand and I have to start getting in my head to go to these places more often as possible. While looking at the work by Chris Killip I was immediately influenced and felt so strong about his works.

They helped me think of home back in Ireland and reminded me of friends and family in the same type of situations as the scenes Chris actually documented and captured.
