               chin   landed   in   her   palm,   laid   flat   on   her   stomach   and   propped   up   on   her   elbows.   light   eyes   studied   the   girl   as   boredom   ate   away   at   her   mind.   “you   are   ??”   bottom   lip   jutted   out   in   a   childish   pout.   “are   y’sure   ??”   obnoxious   as   always,   duckie   revealed   a   deck   of   uno   cards.   feet   kicked   in   the   air   from   excitement.   “too   tired   for   a   round   of   uno   ??”

                    vivienne’s   question   hits   rosalina   hard   ,   which   she   does   find   amusing   on   some   level   despite   her   reluctance   to   show   it .     she’s   used   to   being   the   one   asking   hard   hitting   questions   ,   not   being   on   the   receiving   end    ―    even   if   it   does   seem   to   be   aimed   at   the   earth’s   population   as   a   whole   and   not   the   two   of   them   specifically .     folding   her   hands   in   her   lap   ,   she   looks   at   the   young   woman   in   a   new   light .     she’s   clearly   wise   beyond   her   years   ,   as   a   result   of   some   kind   of   massive   trauma   that   she   is   unwilling   to   discuss   quite   yet .     of   course   ,   rosalina   could   go   psychically   prying   to   see   what   is   going   on   here   ...   but   ,   she   feels   that   would   be   a   total   breach   of   trust   and   it   would   surely   only   make   a   mess   of   things .     it’s   better   if   vivienne   tells   her   herself   ,    ❛   humanity   has   become   desensitized   to   violence .   ❜    she   utters   with   a   somber   nod   of   her   head   ,    ❛   i   see   it   as   ...   a   universal   coping   mechanism .    albeit   ,   not   a   very   good   one .     burying   your   head   in   the   sand   gets   you   nowhere .   ❜

       some things are better in the dark. in the light of the streetlamp it would be difficult to tell how much sleep she had lost over this last case. there was a nagging at her that it was never enough, the way her body was meant to toss and turn at night. the spikes of anxiety and worrying. despite her best efforts clarice could not escape the racing thoughts. so instead she wore them out. spent nights at the bar near her flat to tire them. she found sleep so much easier when she had tired herself beyond compare. she closed her eyes and leaned against the exterior of the bar. she can still hear the music drifting out from the cracked window. clarice rummaged around her pocket for a cigarette and placed it between her teeth. she groaned, turning to the person next to her. “ do you have a light ? ”
