Summary: Roman and Remus occasionally share a dream, but they always remember it slightly differently once they wake up.
(Inspired by @pattons-time-capsule / @greennerdbird's tumblr post about the twins reliving memories in form of dreams.)
I'm building off of my fic Self Discovery, but that is not neccasary to read or understand this! However, @avidfander2, I hope you enjoy me finally doing something more with this fic lol. I want to write more from Virgil's perspective eventually, but I really gotta finish Featherless Wings before I commit to anything more >;
...
Remus had a dream. He was pulling a young Virgil by the hand, but it wasn't really Virgil. Not yet.
He felt giddy about the fact that he would help Caution become more than the facet currently was, especially because he was excited to see the process. His own process had been painful, but incomplete. A part of him ached to fully become a Creativity that was no longer so torn.
That didn't matter now. He said something to Caution. A caution for Caution, isn't that neat? To his delight, Caution decided to continue on despite the hesitation and fear obviously leaking out of the facet. He left a burst of red when stepped through the doorway to the Imagination, a place that was his lonely playground.
Not for long though, because Caution followed him through. It was funny. The facet's eyes were squeezed shut, cheeks bulging as the fearful little thing refused to breathe out. Then Caution jumped through, joining him in the sun with eyes blown wide with wonder.
He could feel the magic of the Imagination swirl as it entered the side. Caution hesitantly proclaimed his true name: Virgil. With a grin, he shared his own name in turn.
"My name is Romulus. Its nice to finally meet you," he said, his hand extended for a handshake. Virgil shook it.
Romulus continued to grin as Virgil's smile fell. As Virgil collapsed to the ground with a shriek, six pointy things on his back bulged beneath his shirt, straining to break free. The sound of tearing cloth was hidden by the sound of Caution's screech of pain that was almost like music to his ears.
Finally someone else would understand. Someone shared his pain, and was made better from it.
Virgil panted as his spider legs unfurled behind him, sealing him as someone, and not just something.
…
Roman shifted in his sleep, turning over as he began to dream.
He was guiding a young boy who needed his help.
He felt a slight sense of relief that he could help this boy, Caution, become more than he once was. He was a bit worried that Caution would turn back, but any proper royal had a duty to his subjects! He walked until Caution and him stood in front of a doorway that glowed green, and then he warned Caution that the individualization would sting. A part of him was too scared to share the extent of the pain awaiting Caution if the facet decided to press forward.
His own process had been painful, but incomplete. A part of him ached to fully become a Creativity that was no longer so torn, but he couldn't admit that.
To make the offer of joining him more tempting, he said it would be fun! Because it would be. They would have so much fun—as long as they could be together. To his delight, Caution decided to bravely ignore his warning, even if the facet was not quite sold on it being fun.
With one last smile to the facet that was about to become so much more, he stepped through the doorway to the Imagination and waited.
Little Caution squeezed his little eyes tight, his cheeks puffing out as the fearful thing held his breathe. Then Caution jumped through, joining him in the sun with eyes blown wide with wonder.
He could feel the magic of the Imagination swirl ominously as it leaked into the side who hesitantly asked him if it was really true, if his name was really Virgil. With a grin, he shared his own name in turn.
"My name is Romulus. Its nice to finally meet you," he said, his hand extended for a handshake. Virgil shook it.
Romulus froze as Virgil's smile fell, even if he expected it. Hand slipping away from his own, Virgil collapsed to the ground. The sound of tearing cloth was hidden by the sound of Caution's screech of pain that made his heart pang for his friend.
Because now that Caution had a name and was free from a experience completely dictated by their host, Caution could actually be his friend. Finally someone else would understand.
Virgil panted as his spider legs unfurled behind him, sealing him as someone, and not just something.
