Monday, June 7: Kick Axe, “Cause for Alarm”
Upon release, Vices was mostly received as another of the many pop-metal records suddenly emerging in the wake of Quiet Riot’s sudden success. And that wasn’t unfair, as Kick Axe’s debut was one of the first things Spencer Proffer produced after Metal Health put himself and his Pasha Records imprint on the map, and indeed had pretty much the same sound and production as QR’s breakthrough. But Kick Axe, besides being Canadian, were also hungrier, a touch smarter and significantly less grating than Kevin DuBrow and company, as numbers like “Cause for Alarm” had more edge and bite. George Criston’s vocals worked in the same range as much of the Sunset Strip singers, but there was something a little more personable about his screeching, while the rest of the band’s performance sizzled just as intensely as Proffer’s trademark frazzled recording. The tune was rowdy, fun, catchy and banging, and while it wasn’t exactly an unheralded gem, “Cause for Alarm” was one of the better and more enjoyable hair metal jams of the day.
