Last Sunday evening just after 5 or so I walked down Frenchmen St in the French Quarter with my brother and his wife weaving in and out of clubs and bars, open air markets and the occasional eclectic artisan shop, past the down on their lucks here and there as we walked west. Live music poured from the bars and clubs into the warm early evening air, my brother and his wife went in to listen I stayed on the street alone. As I walked a little further I happened upon a couple of 20 somethings sitting at card tables of all things on the sidewalk and on the tables sat 2 small travel style manual typewriters one clicking away as I approached. A sign hanging at the edge of the table said, the spontaneous prose store. Well I just had to ask - what the heck is going on here. The young man was busy typing away so the young lady said after a few pleasantries, “we will write you a poem on any topic you like right now, right this minute and if you like it, you may pay us what ever you like or keep the poem as a gift for free…” Intrigued I was, what manner of street performers had I found. Any topic? I asked, she said yes any topic. After some thought I said - unrequited love… After a look of mild surprise KHG started to work and about 10 minutes later created the work pictured here before you. I love it, I love that it was created for me and me alone. I paid her $20 bucks, I think I will frame it… my first commissioned work. @thespontaneousprosestore
