I was not super impressed by the first book in the series, but as I am not a quitter, I hoped the second book with another couple would work better. In some aspects, I was correct, but this is not going to be my favorite series by any means. There is something about the writing, some of the language that's used, that just grates on me. Iâm far enough now that I am going to finish the series, but I doubt that Zoe and Bradâs book is going to change my mind.Â
Key of Knowledge follows Dana Steele, a librarian who has been pulled into a tale that usually she would be curled up on a chair reading. After Mallory completes her part of the quest, it is now Dana's turn to try and find the key that will open the magical chest holding the souls of the Glass Princesses. The problem is that Danaâs first love, and her brother Flynnâs best friend, Jordan Hawke, is making everything more difficult. While she is attempting to figure out her feelings for Jordan, she also has to manage the stress at work and all the work she has to do on the business she is opening with Mallory and Zoe. As Dana gets closer to the key, the dark sorcerer Kane will do whatever he has to to make sure she fails. It isnât just Danaâs livelihood and heart on the line, it is also her life.Â
The plot of this novel wasnât much different than the first, though Dana doesnât seem to spend a lot of time looking for the key. Unlike the first novel, where Mallory is constantly thinking about the key and trying to find it, most of Danaâs thoughts are on the business and Jordan. As annoying as it would have been for us to have another novel of constant thoughts of âI donât know how to find a keyâ, it seemed as if she wasnât worried about it at all. It wasnât until the end of the novel, like the last twenty percent, that the key became the main focus of the novel.Â
I found Dana and Jordanâs relationship more believable because they knew one another for many years, I donât understand why huge decisions have to be made within a month. I get that is the time period that Dana has for her task, but within four weeks she completely changes her life and itâs hard to suspend that much disbelief. I did appreciate that the miscommunication made sense and the big issue was fixed in less than a chapter. We also got a lot more of Jordanâs backstory and he seems more real than Flynn. The reason he left also made a lot of sense and I appreciate the way that grief was discussed in this novel.Â
The best relationships in this series are between the women. While it is a bit over the top at times, I never doubt that Mallory, Dana, and Zoe care about one another. They are also competent and while the men want to help, they are not necessary for the women to do their daily tasks. While the men are attached to the quest, they are chosen to be in the womenâs lives and that is a balance that some romances manage.Â
This was a great palate cleanser after reading a more tense novel, but I wouldnât recommend it. This is a three-star read and while I will finish the series, it will not be adding my collection.Â
She surrounded herself with books at work and at home. Her living space was a testament to her first and abiding love, with shelves jammed with books, tables crowded with them. She saw them not only as knowledge, entertainment, comfort, even sanity, but as a kid of artful decoration.
It was a mistake to think of houses, old houses, as being empty. They were filled with memories, with the faded echoes of voices. Drops of tears, drops of blood, the ring of laughter, the edge of tempers that had ebbed and flowed between the walls, into the walls, over the years.
Wasn't it, after all, a kind of life?
