Algeria. When Ketchaoua mosque used to be a cathedral during the colonization era.Â
The ottoman style mosque was built in 1436 but was transformed into a cathedral in 1832 by the French during colonization. In 1962 and after the country’s independence, it became again a mosque.Â
Algeria. Ketchaoua mosque in Algiers.

The Ketchaoua Mosque has graced the lower Casbah of Algiers since the early 1600s. During colonial times, the French converted the mosque into the Cathédrale Saint-Philippe, but maintained numerous Quranic inscriptions in the interior while adding Neo-Mauresque flourishes to the facade. Upon Algeria’s independence in 1962, the building was again converted into a mosque, and one of its cathedral bells gifted to a church in Bretagne. In a nod to the mosque’s Ottoman origins, the Turkish government launched a renovation project in 2015, and Ketchaoua reopened earlier this year, a symbol of coexist-ence newly restored.
