yk what i realized? in s05 fics where arwen are married and merthur are (unknowingly) in love with each other, gwen always just accepts that arthur, her husband and king, loves merlin, her best friend, too or sometimes only (like the fic makes it sound like arthur never loved gwen. he respects her and they’re close, but he isn't in love). even when she gets hurt and upset, she eventually accepts her fate and gives them her blessing. she doesn’t lash out or is selfish. never.
meanwhile, arthur banished her for having kissed and loved another man a day before their betrothal. but that never crosses gwen’s mind when she realizes her husband and best friend are besotted with each other. she doesn't remember arthur yelling at her and almost getting physical (grabbing her shoulders hard and angry). she doesn't remember how it took a while for arthur to forgive her and ask her to be his wife and queen again.
gwen always is like “i’ll always be your queen, arthur, but i know your heart belongs to merlin. it’s okay. be happy.”

just watched the iconic merthur scenes from s01e01 in german… while i don’t ever wanna hear that again, i think it’s hilarious how much more condescending it is cuz merlin uses formal speech while still insulting arthur lmaoo
