Neither Black or White, light or dark, that is the grey purgatory of the Old Earth Creationist (OEC). 

OEC neither believes wholly in the Bible or Wholly in the science, they are outcasts and vagabonds of both. 

There is a stern warning in the Word of God not to alter any meanings put down in scripture, by necessity the OEC must blow through that stop sign and violate the precept.

For example:

When they change the intended meaning of Yom (Hebrew for day) in Genesis 1 it perverts the example of Adam and Eve, proclaiming the couple were billions of years late to the Creation event and bear no responsibility for a fallen creation. 

Finally there is no peace in the world of the old earth-er, they are always struggling to cram the round peg of the Bible into the square hole of science, when forced both objects are forever damaged. But the greatest sin these evangelists of destruction spread is in the books they write, apostates themselves they make disciples whispering in itching ears of others who would compromise.
