second breakfast? it was "goûter du matin" when i was a kid, as opposed to just "goûter" which is round 4 o'clock. At work we just called it sandwich break

*shrugs* they’s got calories, and they’re suitable for human consumption. i could do worse, i think (okay, they taste gross, but i don’t actually mind so much? i’m usually too hungry to actually care what i’m eating by lunchtime...)

pompom nose, but not red. Your colour scheme is too coherent at the moment for a truly Horrible Hat. If you have some of that Christmas sweater yarn with itchy metallic bits woven through it, now's the time.

I do not. I have green, pink, white, blue, the orange of the eyes, and a leeeetle bit of red. I’m thinking the red would clash best, esp. if I have blue poms at the ends of the i-cords.

1: symmetry would make it better and therefore worse

I split it up like that too, otoh I was homeschooled for elementary school so I never had to do any of those weird “just memorize your times tables, that’s learning, right?” things.

Oooh, how’d that work out for you? I homeschooled through middle school, but that was well after we did times tables. They were obnoxious to memorize, but they did end up being very helpful, so.

(I never bothered with the 12+ times tables, though, and I don’t really know 11 or 12, I just build from what I do know; 11 is easy, and 12*5 = 60, so I can figure out 12*(6,7,8,9) from there. 12*11 is 121, which is cute, and 12^2 = 1 gross, which is easy.)

Huh. I tend to go by 10s and 5s, so (20x4)-(2x4). Leaves far neater numbers for the in-between steps, which is very handy for my weird brain

Oooh, that is interesting and useful! I might take that. It’s always helpful to know several ways to do things.

(Except when your brain gets stuck doing the same problem over and over because it wants to run through the different ways to do it, and then it thinks maybe it forgot one, and has to keep redoing them no matter how many times you tell it that you do so remember doing it that way, and...)

i honestly can’t remember my school ever teaching me any helpful math tricks. I learned the 9s thing from my mom (the one where you subtract and then add the difference?) and my friend taught me to remember 7x8= 56 because 5,6,7,8, but that’s about it

I also tend to split things up for adding or multiplication though

and add/subtract by 10s a lot. like 18+19= 19+10= 29+8= 37

I dunno what 9s thing you learned - I know several, like the way to do it on your fingers (I actually don’t know how to do this one, I just know that kids did), and that for 9*[1,10] the digits of the product will sum to 9 (9+0, 1+8, 2+7...), or the one I actually used, which is that for each interval the tens place goes up one and the ones place goes down one.

I suspect it’s the saga writer whose geography sucks.

~let me elaborate~ - I dunno who all these saga writers were, but they came some four hundred years later, when people were not going a-viking, i.e. getting cosmopolitan and well-traveled and all. In fact, they were people who could write, which kiiiiinddaaaaa suggests they were probably homebound monk types. *shrugs* I’m guessing here. But it’s more likely that the saga writer would make a mistake than that probably-he would put in a subtle reference to a place you can’t sail to and not call himself out on it.

(Also as I recall we were supposed to  like this person, so I don’t think he’s intended to be a liar.)
