There was a post that I cannot find again for the life of me where someone said Death by a Thousand Cuts is a Ben Solo song because he’s exactly the kind of fool that would talk to traffic lights and ever since I have been unable to listen to DbaTC without thinking of that so I’m here to elaborate on that with a very niche essay. Not only would Ben be the one to talk to traffic lights (since it wouldn’t be the first time he’s talked to inanimate objects) but the simple drama, the upfront-ness of the whole song is the same attitude as Ben’s. Unlike Rey, he “can’t pretend it’s ok when it’s not.” So for him, after TLJ (because this is an “apart” song and that’s when they are apart) saying goodbye IS death by a thousand cuts, because he doesn’t pretend that that doesn’t exist, so every day he has to face the reality that “the morning comes and you’re not my baby”. It’s that Honesty of Feeling, the Feeling It All and Feeling It Unabashedly that’s just so Ben?? And the way he copes with it is just like “I’ll be alright it’s just a thousand cuts.” But because he’s so honest about feelings he’s kinda haunted by it all. Rey is too but she’s always running from it. But Ben’s attitude is always that “look through the windows of this love, even though we boarded them up”—that insistent proximity to things. He has to look. He’s still constantly writing pages even when something’s over. And then the bridge???the details?? Is not “Quiet my fears with the touch of your hand” the most perfect and truest description of the hut scene? Is not “paper cut stings from our paper thin plans” the most Ben Solo son of Han Solo line ever?? “Tryna find a part of me you didn’t take up / Gave you so much (but it wasn’t enough)” because!! His modus operandi around Rey always turns into giving because that’s who he is??? He did give and thinks!! He’s not enough!! But!! He is!! It’s the country and all the stuff Rey doesn’t want, she just wants him!!! And until Rey let’s him know that he “takes the long way home” and 100% talked to the Gffa equivalent of traffic lights to ask if it would all work out cause he was Going Through It and they were in love but also really dumb in the most ordinary human ways.
