the final part of this series! I really liked Suga’s rap in this song, especially the part where he rhymed 섬 and 모래성. I wish they would collaborate more.... I always enjoy Suga’s collaborations - I really loved Wine (with Suran!). I remember first hearing that song in Moonshot’s flagship store at Samcheong-dong during one of my trips to Korea and I immediately looked the song up and saved it. Maybe I should do that song as part of this series sometime in future.

hi! i’m starting a new series to commit myself to regularly study and practice my Korean skills. officially, i’ve been learning korean for about 3.5 years now, but even before i started korean classes, i was already picking up some words on my own through kpop song lyrics. i thought this would be a really fun way for me to make and hopefully, be fun for you to learn along with me as well!

i’ll try to do maybe one song every one to two weeks - i’ll break down the lyrics to parts of the song and give the definitions for the words that i don’t know. i’m starting off the series with IU’s latest song. i know it has been almost a month since it has been released, but i really like the song and I really wanted to make this! there aren’t a lot of words that i don’t know from this song, but i just included some words that i thought would be useful for beginners to learn as well! i hope you’ll enjoy this! and if there’s any song that you would like to see, do let me know!

N + 대로:

⇒ following N, as N, in accordance with N

    그대로 = 그 + 대로

       ⇒ 그 - that

       ⇒ just like that, as things are, just like the current situation

    이대로 = 이 + 대로

       ⇒ 이 - this

       ⇒ just like this, as things are, just like the current situation

    마음대로 = 마음 + 대로

       ⇒ 마음 - heart

       ⇒ as one wishes, “following the heart”

을/ㄹ + 대로:

⇒ to express that a situation is extreme

E.g. from the song, 해질 대로 해져버린 기억

hi, i’m back with another song! this time it’s happy by taeyeon and i fell in love with this song the moment i heard it. every time this song comes on, i’m instantly in a happier mood hahaha

there were a couple of unfamiliar words for me here and there were some grammar that i’ve never learnt before too! it was a really helpful exercise for me this time and i hope it would be for you too 💖 i referred heavily to a few websites for the grammar rules as they are new to me so i’ve included links to those websites for further reading. they’re really great resources!

V 아/어 + 오다: to indicate that the action is carried out continually

⇒ 계절이 번져 와

the spreading seasons

⇒ 저는 그 할머니를 어머니처럼 모셔 왔어요.

i’ve cared for that old lady like my own mother.

⇒나는 꾸준히 노력해 왔어요.

I’ve been working hard consistently.

⇒ 지금까지 혼자 잘 살아 왔어요.

Until now, I have lived alone well.

⇒ 김사장님이 화사를 잘 이끌어 왔어요.

President Kim has led the company well.

V + 곤 하다: an expression used to indicate that the same situation repeats 같은 상황이 반복됨을 나타내는 표현 (from Naver dictionary)

⇒ 미소를 짓곤 해

I keep breaking into a smile.

⇒ 예전에는 만화책도 곧잘 읽곤 했지만 요새는 잘 보지 않는다.

I used to read comic books a lot in the past, but nowadays, I don’t read them anymore.

⇒ 딸아이는 아빠가 집에 돌아올 때면 쏟살같이 달려가 아빠에게 덥석 안기곤 한다.

When the dad returns home, his daughter would always dash towards him and hug him.

⇒ 지수는 방학만 되면 서울에 있는 고모 댁에 놀러 가곤 했다.

Jisoo always heads to her aunt’s house in Seoul to play whenever it’s the school holidays.

배가 고파도 안 먹을 거야. - Even if I’m hungry, I won’t eat.

천 번 사과해도 용서를 못해요. - Even if you apologise a thousand times, I can’t forgive you.

➡︎ V (으) + 면:  If/ when

배고프면 간식이라도 먹어. - If you’re hungry, have something to eat, even if it’s just a snack

back with another song for this series! I didn’t realise how much english was used in this song until I looked at the lyrics hahaha i skipped the entire chorus since it was 90% english

the twice members are all so pretty and this was really enjoyable to make! i hope this would be useful in learning new vocabulary!

V (아/어) + 보다

⇒ to try to do something, to attempt to do something (the verb preceding 보다)

피해봐 = 피하다 (to avoid) + 보다 ⇒ to try to avoid

숨겨봐 = 숨기다 (to hide) + 보다 ⇒ to try to hide

도망쳐봐 = 도망치다 (to escape) + 보다 ⇒ to try to escape

V + 을 듯하다: a more formal and polite version of  을 것 같다. Used when the speaker is supposing or speculating about some event or situation.

⇒ 현장 경험이 없는 김 대리가 그 일을 맡는 것은 무리일 듯합니다.

It seems a bit too much to give that job to assistant manager Kim, who has no hands-on experience.

This expression is also often used in news reports and headlines. 

⇒ 고속도로 몸살, 저녁까지 정체 이어질 듯
