A 15-year-old girl pleaded guilty on Tuesday to first-degree manslaughter in the April stabbing death of an honor roll student who was a cheerleading star, according to a statement from the Westchester County prosecutors in New York.
"The defendant took it upon himself to end the life of Kayla Green and must now face the consequences of this tragic and devastating incident," District Attorney Miriam E. Roach said in a statement. "We believe that the families of all those who have suffered from this senseless violence could begin the journey of healing." The accused, who is not named because she is a minor, was sentenced to between three and nine years in state prison, according to January 24 testimony. The Journal News reports that 16-year-old Green calls himself captain of the junior cheerleading squad at Mount Vernon High School and blames the independent cheerleading squad at Which Green when the party begins. Prosecutors said the stabbings occurred minutes after Green attended a celebration for the Mount Vernon State basketball team, according to CBS2 New York. The defendant stabbed Green with a knife he had previously shown on social media. Green was stabbed in the back and side. News 12 The Bronx reported at the time that the other teenager was best friends with Green, who had to recover from her injuries. The girlfriend's mother, Nicole Duncan, clarified to the broadcaster that her daughter will "never be the same" after the accident.
