Final Score: 84 points Super rich fragrance of tropical fruits, notably pineapple/coconut common to Burundis, then delivers a solid dark, oreo cookie crust, sweet, dark chocolate punch. The acidity fails to hold up the sweet, creamy cookie chocolate as I expected which was surprising for an African coffee. The demure acidity would make this coffee excellent as an espresso. Burundi continues to produce excellent coffees that have their own distinctive personality. Without generalizing too much, we find them to have a slight earthy, minerally funk, in this case reminiscent of red clay. Reports from producers and importers have suggested that the potato defect is all but eradicated but the mildly vegetable, dusty notes persist and frankly make this a memorable coffee experience in the store. The Ugly Mug is one of Michigan's original specialty coffee roasteries. The people who work there are some of the most humble and hardworking guys I know in coffee. It has been fun to watch them evolve--from a hipster college cafe/hangout to roastery and back again. A recent trip to origin is a sign of their passion and commitment to excellence. Looking forward to more great work in the future.
