Someone stop me.
Katali and her cubs
Made for @spirits-and-scales
Are all Tama's other mates honorary parents to these kids too, like with the crablings?
((Iâm gonna have to say no to that one for a few reasons. As far as the crablings are concerned, the other mates being âhonorary parentsâ kind of makes sense because those who were his mates at the time were a lot more involved with both Tamatoa and Hemo and basically had interlinking relationships.
For Katali, she doesnât really think like that. Sheâs accepted that the crablings see her as a mother of sorts and she basically considers them to be âadoptedâ where sheâs concerned, which is just as well. (I also think I remember something about her and Lian being their godparents anyway, though itâs been long enough that Iâm not quite sure what the final discussion was.) However, she doesnât consider Tamatoaâs other mates to also be hers. Most of them she hardly knows -if at all- and the others she only considers acquaintances or friends. Also, having spent time being raised by wolves, she grew up with the mindset of only having one mate for life, and thatâs how she wants to keep things for herself even though Tamatoa thinks differently.
Now, as far as the cubs, Katali fully expects to raise her cubs in much the same way as wolves raise their young because thatâs her heritage as a shapeshifter as well as her choice. And while other wolves do help care for the cubs of any given pair within the pack when itâs necessary, they donât claim the cubs to be theirs when the parents are still present in their childrenâs lives. And itâs generally the same with humans as well.
That being said, I donât see Katali being okay with her cubs calling someone else âmomâ or such either. Sheâs highly loving, protective, rightfully possessive as a mother. The idea of âsharingâ her biological kids with anyone other than Tamatoa would only hurt her. ))
The sun shone brightly above the sky-water as a portal of fog and a dark tunnel opened up in front of the king's lair. Katali stepped through, feeling the warm light on her back before walking into the shadier space of the shell cave. She squinted as she glanced around for her mate. It was taking her eyes a minute longer to adjust than usual, but once she spotted him her face lit up and she trotted over. "Tamatoa!" she called over the covered basket hanging from her jaws. "I'm home!"
Tamatoa was sorting through his treasures as usual, but of course the sound of his mate momentarily pulled him away from his polishing.
âYouâre back!â he trilled, and after he quickly finished cleaning a smudge off of a large shell, he set it on his back and went to greet Katali properly.
He leaned down, and one of his antennae gently caressed the wolfâs side. âAre you feeling better, babe? Not sick anymore, are ya?â

A large basket of Easter treats appears in a whirl of thin fog. A note is attached. //Katali insisted that you have these. She also plans to return soon as the worst of her illness has subsided. Please do look after her when she does. Happy Easter - Thorn.//
Tamatoa squinted at the note... a few of the words flew over his minimal reading level, but he did recognize Kataliâs name, the words âreturn soonâ and the phrase âlook after her.â He could piece together the rest.
âI will,â he answered out loud, confident that Thorn would somehow hear him. âKeep an eye on her âtil then... And tell her I love her.â
The warm afternoon sun filtered through the lair on a steady breeze, sending a few early leaves fluttering into the crystal tunnel of Thornâs cavern. All was quiet, and one might think it was almost calm. ButâŚnot quite.
As the spirit shuffled through the somewhat crowded lair Katali was sitting up on the makeshift bed with her back against the wall and knees partially pulled up. She clutched a large pillow against her chest and was justâŚstaring at the ground ahead. Her expression was a mixture of things, seemingly unable to settle on just one. Only two stood out more prominently than others behind a stunned and furrowed brow.
Uncertainty. And fear.
Lian stood practically frozen at the threshold of the cavern as he glanced between her and their guardian. The news still hadnât fully sunk in it seemed. Or he was still processing. It was hard to tell. But above all it appeared he was still deciding on somethingâŚ
ThatâŚcouldnât be good. At least not for a certain individualâŚ
Even so, Thorn was doing his best to ease them -Katali in particular- into theâŚ.situation. âI do wish you had come to me sooner,â he said as he turned and gingerly took her hand, placing a small herbal assortment in her palm. âI could have stopped the illness before it became this bad. Combined with your condition and already meager health, it had you in and out of consciousness for the last two days.â Her only response was wrapping her fingers around the herbs, so he continued. âYou really must take better care of yourself, my dear.â
The poor thing was silent as she held the pillow closer, but decidedly not too tightly as she made an attempt to make herself look smaller. Somehow she had been so mentally preoccupied she hadnât even noticed how sick she was. And for some reason she certainly hadnât thought thatâŚ
âA-areâŚare you sureâŚ.?â she finally muttered weakly. A question meant for what he decided to tell her only moments ago.
Thorn nodded. âI have known for a long while, so yes,â he said evenly. âOriginally I did want you to discover this on your own. However, the coming days are few. So there is little time to spare in high risks.â Thankfully not too high anymore, given the archangelâs efforts, he thought to himself as he turned to his craft table and began picking through an assortment of dull colored stones.
âSoâŚI wasnât just imagining thingsâŚâ
Finally Lian spoke up, though his voice gave nothing away other than the fact he was still sorting through all the thoughts in his head. âDid you really not notice?â he asked her.
Katali gave him a glance. âNotâŚentirely?â she said with a cringe under his gaze. âI meanâŚhow Iâve started to look isnât exactly easy to miss⌠I just thought I was imagining it.â
Perhaps a small part of you was also denying it, Thorn thought as if she could hear. Given your doubts, however, that could be understandable.
The dragon-shifter groaned under his breath as he leaned with his shoulder against the wall, covering his mouth with a hand in thought as he cast his gaze to the side. âI still canât believe I didnât notice until now,â he said then glanced at her apologetically. âSorry about that, by the way⌠..Itâs all those big dumb sweaters youâve been wearing.â
After finishing with Thornâs herbal medicine Katali wrapped her free arm around her middle like a barrier while careful to avoid agitating the year-old scars. âIâm sorry⌠For some reason I justâŚwasnât thinking,â she said quietly.
âDo not apologize, my dear,â Thorn corrected gently. âIllnesses like this can negatively affect the clear-thinking mind, particularly in your case. There is nothing you need to be sorry for.â
âYeah, donât worry about it. Iâm just still trying to wrap my head around all thisâŚâ Then he fell quiet a moment. âWhat about Tamatoa? Has he caught on yet?â Honestly he figured not. Kataliâs condition may have slipped by him, but one thing he did notice was a sheer lack of the crabâs presence around her the past four weeks. So frankly, he was expecting something akin to a simple âno.â
But it was as if he drove a sword right through the target at the core of her fears. The color drained from her face as her eyes grew wide, and she became dead silent as if she forgot how to breathe. Her eyes glazed overâŚ
Then hell started to break loose.
âOh noâŚno- nO- NO!!!â Her panic skyrocketed, her voice rising in volume with each word as if she were being driven mad. She nearly launched off the bed, scattering straw in her wake.
âKATALI!!!â Startled off guard Lian and Thorn whirled around to stop her, as the moment her feet hit the floor her legs buckled from fatigue.
Thankfully they caught her mid fall, but she was still fighting to get away from them while nearly shrieking at the top of her lungs like a wounded and terrified animal. âHe doesnât know!!!â she shouted as she fought to get away. âI have to tell him NOW! If I donât HEâLL HATE ME!! HEâLL THINK IâM LYING!â
âYou have to stay put and recover!â Thorn grunted with the effort of holding her still, trying not cause her harm while also avoiding being hit himself. Contrary to possible belief, it was rather difficult.
âBUT HE DOESNâT TRUST ME!!!â she wailed back. By now tears were streaming down her face. âWHERE IS HE?!?! WHAT IF HE CHANGED HIS MIND?!?!!!â
Every single vibration from her voice bellowed through the tunnels, shaking dust free from the walls and causing the inlaid crystals among them to sound as if they would shatter any second.
âKatali, stop it!â Lian shouted over her thrashing. âYouâre only making it worse!â At the same time, fearing the worst and having no other options, Thorn placed his hand in the middle of her back and barked something in ancient wolf-tongue. With an intense flash of light she was suddenly forced back into wolf form. Her struggling finally ceased, and she fell limp in their arms.
The wolfâs eyes were closed and her chest heaved with every gasp to reclaim the air she lost in the panic, but she was calming down.
Lian didnât let go until after he and the guardian eased her to the ground. Once she was settled he sat back on his knees, shaken and a little out of breath. Even when sheâs sickâŚsheâs a lot stronger than she looksâŚ
Thorn did the same, running his hand along Kataliâs scruff and shoulders as an added calming gesture. âI was afraid of thatâŚâ he muttered gravely. After a minute he added, âWhen she is stable again the spell to keep her bound in wolf form will wear offâŚ. But her human body cannot withstand all of this while she is sick⌠Even in health it can be dangerousâŚâ And that was implication enough. Thorn saw the younger shapeshifterâs hands form tight fists against his legs, also hearing a dark growl rumble from his chest and throat. And when he looked up he saw Lianâs eyes glowing yellow, glaring and burning with a furious inner fire.
He was not going to tolerate his sister being under this much pressure.
With an abrupt snarl he got to his feet and marched toward the exit. He had another target to hit, this time with the utmost intention. âWhere are you going?â In all honesty, Thorn could already guess. If he didnât have to keep such a close watch on Katali he would be all too tempted to do the same.
âLalotai.â
Katali giggled with a wide smile, showing off her teeth in the process. "Good!" Then she added, "I'll be doing more hunting and baking anyway, so no need to get grabby. There should end up being plenty for everyone."
âLooking forward to it, babe~â
Jay nodded. ((We may not be having as big a party as last time, but weâll be celebrating all day.))
