Dream A Little Dream - Writing Challenge
Kat opened her eyes, momentarily disoriented by her surroundings. The velvet curtains had been drawn away from the windows, allowing the light to stream in. This wasn't her room -- or was it? She got up from her bed, looking down at her nightgown in surprise which she quickly banished, what was so surprising about a nightgown? Walking over to her wardrobe, she opened the doors, picking a dress to wear, a fleeting question of when she last wore a dress going through her mind.
Next came her hair -- which was far past her waist, a length she hadn't had in years -- which she put up herself, wondering where her maid was. Maid? Since when had she had a maid? Better yet, why did she have a maid? Was she rich? The answer 'yes' simply placed itself into her mind, as if second nature. Then why wasn't the maid there? A memory drifted past, and she immediately knew that she had ordered the maid to let her dress herself, she didn't need the pampering -- she'd said -- and refused to let the maid help.
That would explain that then, she thought.
Once finished, she headed for the door, bracing herself for something which she just knew was waiting for her. Where were the servants? Surely they should be somewhere... wait... servants? Opening the door, she walked out of the room, immediately seeing Bianca walking out of hers from down the corridor. Kat's eyes scanned her sister's figure, taking in the same kind of gown that she herself wore.
"What are you staring at?" Bianca asked, tucking a stray hair into her numerous braids. Apparently the Bianca in this... whatever it was... was the same.
"You." she answered simply. "After all, can't you see?"
Bianca growled lowly. "Come on, father awaits us for breakfast. Please don't try to start a fight, you know how it angers him."
"You dare to tell me what to do?" Kat asked. "I am the elder."
"So you constantly remind me." Bianca snorted. "As does the fact that you have scared off every suitor who came to ask for your hand."
"It is not my fault they are all repulsive clots. At least I do not worry about Signior Gremio or Hortensio, both old enough to be our father, and desiring nothing but a pretty woman on their arms." Who were those names belonging to? Her mind searched for the answer, yet didn't come up with anything other than a fleeting memory. Still she found herself saying things she didn't understand, continuing her little speech. "I refuse to be put on a shelf... but you seem not to mind."
Bianca grumbled, picking up her skirts to head down the stairs. Kat followed, entering the dining room with trepidation, expecting the day to be filled with agony unknown. She sat down, uttering a simple, yet completely discourteous 'Good morning, Father', the argument already beginning.
Kat woke to the sound of her alarm clock, brushing the dream off as nothing more than a simple little imagination... yet, she couldn't shake it off.
