Kaspar hauser

26th May 1828, in the streets of Nuremberg, Germany, a mysterious feral child is discovered wandering the streets, thought to have emerged from the forests. The child who states that his name is Kaspar Hauser, claims to have been raised in a dark cell in total isolation, and fed with rye bread and water, which appeared every day when he woke. He claimed that the only person he ever had contact with was a figure who hid their face, and released him. Over the years he was cared for by various figures, who reported strange incidents in his character and actions. On the 17th October 1829, he was found in a cellar bleeding from his forehead. He claimed that he was attacked by a hooded man who threatened him with the words: "You still have to die ere you leave the city of Nuremberg." On the 14th December 1833, he claimed he was stabbed in the left breast by another strange figure, who gave him a bag containing a note written in mirror writing. Hauser died of his wound three days later. His headstone reads, in Latin, "Here lies Kaspar Hauser, riddle of his time. His birth was unknown, his death mysterious”. One disputed theory was that he was the hereditary prince of Baden, who had been switched with a dying baby by Stéphanie de Beauharnais, cousin by marriage and adopted daughter of Napoleon, according to the theory she disguised herself as a ghost, the "White Lady of Baden", in order to switch the dying child to provide an heir. This theory as well as Hauser’s claims were disputed both during his lifetime, and after.
