Bellydance Day - In this type of dancing, dancers use their torso to make complex moves. Often, they are decked out in dazzling costumes, and depending on the part of the world where you watch the dancers you’ll see different styles of both costume and dance moves. its roots are to be found in antiquity, as a number of sources from ancient Greek and Roman literature talk about dancers making the undulating movements and playing castanets which are indicative of the dance style.
Buckfast Day - Buckfast Tonic Wine is a caffeinated wine that has become part of the Scottish tradition since as far back as the 1960’s. The wine was initially made as an herbal remedy to improve health, which is why it is classified as a tonic wine instead of a regular wine. Originally, however, the drink got its start in England. Buckfast was created and distributed from southern England by Benedictine monks in Buckfast Abbey back during the 1890’s.
Fair Trade Day - There are many people in this world who feel that everyone deserves decent wages and working conditions, regardless of where they live, and these people have created Fair Trade Day. Fair Trade Day is a global event that aims to draw attention to the objectives and achievements of the Fair Trade movement. The Fair Trade movement campaigns to improve the lives of workers and small producers, especially those within developing economies, by asserting their rights and raising their visibility within international trade. The movement invites consumers to participate in its campaign by choosing Fair Trade alternatives to existing products.
Free Trade Day - Economics is a complex social science and its central themes– supply, demand, taxation – are discussed by commentators with many different perspectives. Free Trade Day is one such perspective in modern economic debate. Free Trade Day argues in favor of free trade and reinstalling free trade and removing the tariff barriers. It supports the idea that lower prices for consumers and growth opportunities for producers would ensue.
Iris Day - The fresh, sumptuous luster of their dewy, iridescent blossoms on a spring day, the perky, shivery, curious stem scouting the air and the mesmerizing blush of rainbow colors make it a sight for anyone’s sore eyes. The name comes from the Greek word for ‘rainbow’ and most mythology adepts will tell you Iris was the messenger of the gods, the link between sea and sky.
No Socks Day - This is your chance to let your feet fly free and your toes taste the tarmac. The opportunity to let your feet fly free over the soil and grass and stones of the whole wild world.
Ovarian Cancer Day - Ovarian cancer is a severe health problem in practically every country, both rich and poor. Both medics and individuals need to know the signs and symptoms so that they can screen women and catch the disease early in its development. Part of the purpose of the day itself is to create a sense of solidarity among all those affected. The organizers want people to know that this is a scourge that they can fight and that there is always hope.
Train Day - A day to help celebrate the history of the locomotive. The idea was to engage the general public more on the subject of trains and their history in the development of the modern world. Train Day was a homage to the efforts of our ancestors in building out the rail network. It focuses, particularly on the transcontinental railway.
Windmill Day - The first evidence of a windmill can be found in Weedley, Yorkshire, England and is said to have been built in 1185. They were used primarily to grind grain, and have been for many centuries thereafter. Recently though, there’s been a growing movement to use Windmills in another fashion. The power of the wind can be harnessed to turn giant wind turbines which in turn generate clean, unlimited, renewable energy!
World Donkey Day - Without the help of donkeys, it is hard to imagine that the modern world could ever have come into existence. These hardy pack animals provided civilization with the motive energy needed to generate wealth, well before the advent of steam power or electricity. For that reason, many people consider donkeys just as fundamental to our society as writing, pottery, and metallurgy.
