What is an Avatar (flavorfully)?
An idea made real, Avatars are physical embodiments of other things. Pride, Woe, Lore, and Darkness, but also zeitgeists such as Alara and Zendikar, or the concept of Dragon, Goblin, or Cat. In some cases, a person can even make an Avatar of themselves, sending out their idealized form to fight on their behalf.
What is an Avatar (mechanically)?
Avatars come in all five colors and have a wide variety of abilities. The only consistency among Avatars is that they’re large. Only four of the seventy six avatars (including tokens and cards that turn into Avatars) are smaller than 4/4 without a way to improve their own power and toughness.
Can I make an Avatar deck?
One of the best decks in Modern right now is based on an Avatar. It’s called “Death’s Shadow.” There’s no real reward for the creature type, mind, but if you like Avatars and want to beat face with an Avatar, try using the Avatar of your own impending demise. Dark Depths is another card that allows for an Avatar-based win in older formats.
In Commander, the combination of multiple powerful Legendary Avatars and a number of “choose a creature type” cards means that while there’s no explicit rewards for Avatar Tribal, there’s a number of ways to try it. Further, Avatars tend to be very powerful, with many large enough to be a real threat in Commander on their own. The primary difficulty here would be needing a very strong five-color manabase, as many of the best Avatars have very specific mana requirements. Karona, False God, would likely be the best Commander option here, as she is an Avatar with a “choose a creature type” ability.

Is Avatar a good creature type?
Avatar is a fine creature type. Though there’s a wide variety of Avatars, it’s very clear that an Avatar is something powerful and idealistic, usually with an ability that changes the game. The lack of tribal effects or synergy is fine with a game-ending tribe like Avatar, as usually a single Avatar dictates a strategy or deck on its own, rather than working with others. After all, if you’re the living embodiment of Cat, why would you work with the living embodiment of Willpower? Avatar also has the advantage of being able to show up on any world and make sense everywhere, provided the thing it’s an Avatar of makes sense everywhere.
