Sexism in Debate (yes I’m talking about it)
I need your help, fellow forensicators. I started talking about sexism and the wealth gap in debate, and was brutally attacked on twitter (and later, over the phone). This unfortunate experience has inspired me to write an essay in which I examine how sexism affects an individual in the debate community, to be posted on facebook later this week. I would like to talk about my own experiences, but obviously they do not represent the majority.
That’s where y’all come in. If anyone has resources or experiences they’d like to share, I would be ecstatic to be able to use them, in order to paint a more holistic picture of sexism in debate. As a white queer woman in debate, my ability to go intersectional in debate is limited.
Also, if you could reblog/spread the word, that would also be cool

I really tried but I couldn’t :(
Wait no don't throw me out the window
What? Serena what are you smoking up there in Washington? I literally have no idea what this means.

9. Match each of the tournaments you competed in during 2014 with a song.
The Hurricane: Dumpweed - Blink 182
The Journey: Don’t stop believing - Journey
The Trinity Classic: POWER - Kanye West
Bay City: #TWEET - Splenda C
El Campo: We are the Champions - Queen
NSDA districts: Shake it Off / Blank Space - Taylor Swift
TAPPS state: Super Bass - Our queen
The whole season: Uptown Funk - Bruno Mars
10. Explain who you want to be within the forensics community.
I kind of want to be both feared and loved in the community. Like, I want people to freak out when they find out they’re going to be against me, but I also want them to look back after the round and think that I was a cool guy. I also want to be that one guy with way too many trophies for a shelf, which will be happening probably maybe.

Disclaimer: Be aware of your circuit and your judges and how they’ll likely respond to progressive arguments. Also, the best way to do well is to just be more prepared than the other team. Progressive arguments (especially theory) should not be used as a crutch so you don’t have to research.
And finally, debate is a primarily discursive activity. Be aware of how your language functions in the debate space as well as outside of it, and try not to feed into racism, sexism, classism, etc., especially when answering more kritikal arguments. The debate community is a wonderful space and you should focus on making friends and building people up rather than winning at any cost. Best of luck!
kant-stop said: oh since on the AP test it’s a timed write we always just had 40 minutes or whatever in class to write them. That tends to limit how much you can physically write :p
Yeah I think that way is probably better preparation tbh
kant-stop said: Do you not have time limits
Nope! My teacher does this thing where we get less and less time to write them as the year goes on. So the first one, we had a really long time to write, but this one was assigned about a week ago, and I think the next few are going to be written in class but we'll be able to see the prompts and prep outside of class, and stuff.
I mean I always end up writing mine in an hour the night before so
