Pros and cons
Pros:
- they travel overseas which is swag
- I love(d) debate
- they also do interp which is cool I guess
- ratemyprofessors says that the instructor is like the best
- I have the same professor for my rhetoric class so that’s a solid letter of recommendation if you think about it. Maybe could hook me up with internships?
- 7th grade was the only year I didn’t do debate and during that year I would practice writing cases on like random topics because I missed debate a lot so what if I’m the same way and then I waste time longing for debate instead of studying for class
- When I met up with the debate team at the college’s like club booth things they seemed to like me I think
- I’m a biotech major so I won’t have much time doing anything debate related after the one semester of my rhetoric class
- I’m planning to go to law school anyway so it keeps my writing chops up
- My high school debate partner is doing debate at his community college so I can’t be weak
- What if I can help the debate kids at my high school team with whatever research or cards I make on the college team??
Cons:
- The team only does policy and I only have experience in LD + PF + Parli and lowkey policy scares me like what if I suck
- I got an email saying I’ll have to do an impromptu speech in the first week I think?? What if I suck so bad they hate me and then I have to go to my rhetoric class with the same professor and he knows who I am
- Classes are only at night and I have a loaded schedule because I have to take two science classes with labs. One lab is from 02:30 PM - 06:20 PM bro I’ll have like no free time
- I’m taking a debate/argumentative rhetoric class anyway this semester so why stress myself out with the debate team?
- my schedule is lowkey crazy loaded because being a biotech major is a masochistic choice
- college is already stressful why make it worse
- what if I actually suck at debate and my circuit is just bad so that’s why I’m good here and once I move to their team I’m like laughably bad ?
- my mom thinks it’s a bad idea
- what if it makes me want to switch my major I can’t have that happen I have a plan with biotech
- I’m planning on minoring in legal studies anyway so I’ll probably just take the classes for that and that’ll scratch my debate itch
- Stress once again I have a crazy ass schedule what if that impedes on my overall quality of life

judging a 4n6 tournament today (competitive acting and public speaking) which is something i used to compete in in high school. really obsessed with being on the other side of the judging. it’s like. wow these kids are awesome but this was so high pressure when i did it. the judges were assholes and would tear sixteen year olds to shreds over their diction. really cute how now we’re not allowed to be mean! anyway.
did my first speech & debate tournament this weekend and got absolutely decimated in extemp (im in forensics not debate tbf) but like damn
