The night sky hadn’t looked like this on Alternia.

No matter how much time passed, Kanaya didn’t think she’d ever get used to the way the stars twinkled through the Earth’s strange atmosphere, especially this far out away from the human cities. 

She was endlessly awed by the purple and blue streaks of the galaxy, the gleaming silver of the Earth’s moon. It seemed impossible that something this beautiful could be here forever, night after night, long after they died and new people roamed the planet, looking up at the exact same picture Kanaya was seeing now.

She heard footsteps in the grass and saw Roxy sitting down in her peripheral vision. Kanaya didn’t acknowledge her presence, but Roxy started talking anyway.

“Ya know, after the Condense flooded everything, looking at the stars was my favorite thing to do.”

This gets Kanaya’s attention, and she turns her head to look at Roxy. She’s sitting with her knees pulled up to her chest, arms folded over them and head tilted back to look at the sky. 

“They are very beautiful.” Kanaya said, but as she looked at Roxy, her hair silvery, under the moonlight, eyes gleaming like captured starlight, Kanaya wasn’t sure she was talking about the sky anymore.
