Reasons for Kadykchan's abandonment aren't nearly as classic, but just as peculiar. An emblem of all things Soviet Kadykchan was built by prisoners during WWII and would as the crafters hoped, bare the fruits of a booming economy with its 2 coal mines. The dreams were short-lived when a coal mine explosion killed 6 people and the very marrow of the Siberian city's foundation through the closure of both mines. In 2008, an estimated of 250 remained, from the once-burgeoning town of 7, 000.
