Ahuska cowered in her bed, pressed back against the wall, making herself as small as possible in the tiny cabin that was her room, her space, the only thing that was hers in the entire galaxy, except that it was rapidly feeling less and less as though she really had anything of her own at all.

She tried to find a rebuttal, some convincing words, anything to try and help Nines understand, but the Chiss advanced and spoke again before she could form a sentence.

“I do. I do. Maybe not him personally, but I fething well know his type, better than you ever will. You can’t trust a thing you heard from him. No matter what you’re thinking in that soft little head of yours, every moment you spent with him was fake--”

“No,” the word sounded pitiful, but Ahuska couldn’t let Nines go on. She couldn’t bear it.

There’s good ones and bad ones, and she’s not one of the good ones. She recalled Blakk’s own words, a sentiment strangely echoed now by Nines, and her mind wrestled with her heart, struggling with who to believe.

“No!? You think you know better than me? You’re going to school me, me, on how Intelligence Operatives go about their business?”

“No I’m not, of course I’m not, but it’s not like that, it’s not whatever you’re thinking, he… he just wanted to get away, he never meant to hurt any of us, he was…”

“Sweet?” Derision dripped like venom from Nines’ tone. “Kind? Suckered you in with soft words and big blue eyes?”

“It wasn’t like that! He didn’t try anything like that, he… I just thought…”

Nines’ flat red eyes were terrible. She didn’t have to say a word, didn’t have to move a muscle, to prompt Ahuska to tuck tighter in on herself with a whimper.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me there were other people like me? Why did you let me believe I would always be… alone, the way I am?”

“There are no other beings like you. You are nothing like him, him or any of the rest of them,” Nines’ harsh hiss came through with unnerving conviction. “He is not your friend. You know nothing about him. He is a stranger and he wants us dead…”

“He doesn’t, he doesn’t I swear…”
