This week is #BannedBooksWeek and #DearJustyce is out in the world TODAY! So what better way to celebrate than sharing one of my all time favorite books, #DearMartin, which is a banned book. Dear Justyce is the sequel to Dear Martin and I'm starting it today. Q: What is your favorite diverse book?. Nic Stone is an auto buy author for me - all of her books are so important, be it about race and/or LGBTQIA+ topics, Nic has a way with words for both young adult and middle grade ages and I highly recommend all of her books. I decided to reread Dear Martin, since I first read it back in 2017 as an arc! and wow, I had forgotten so much about this story. It deals with race and racial profiling and how Black people are more likely to be targeted by police vs. someone who is white. And it makes me angry. This book was relevant in 2017, it is even more relevant in 2020, and it will always be relevant. #BlackLivesMatter still. That hasn't changed. The hashtag may not be trending but nothing has changed and its so frustrating. But we can't give up. We have to keep speaking up and fighting the good fight and even if slowly, I hope things will change for the better. This bookstagram is just one little corner of the internet, but I will always share diverse books like this and my wish if for just one new person to pick up this book and start thinking differently. I know since I've started reading more diversely my eyes have been opened and I have learned so much. TL;DR: pick up a book by a Black author. Read their books. Spread the word.
