I remember in Beverly Tatum’s book “Why All The Black Kids Sit Together” (high I have yet to finish) that black kids feel a kin to one another because they sense a “shared destiny” when being together. For LaQuan Banks, his destiny is in danger in @nicstone novel “Dear Justyce.” Nic Stone’s writing, like in “Dear Martin,” is void of flowery embellishments. It really makes her stories, particularly this one, raw and to the point in a “this is how it is” fashion that I admire immensely. It’s like a seed that slowly spouts a stem, then it’s petals, delivering the blow as it bends towards the sun. Quan’s story had me hooked from the beginning and his circumstances and attitude really made me feel for him (Dealing with “Olaf ass Dwight” and discrimination by his teachers, I see why he did the things he did. And what happens when you feel alone, especially for urban black boys? They join gangs, wanting to feel connected. Wanting a family. There are some returning characters that I was THRILLED to see again. Let’s just say SJ is still on a certain privileged white boy’s behind. 😂 The letters Quan wrote to Justice were my favorite parts. It’s authentic and you can really see the difference between him and Justyce. It’s imperative that people read this novel to understand what it’s like fr people like Quan. Who try their hardest only to ned up on lock down. It’s hard for black males to see their futures if there present doesn’t offer a lot of resources. So if you want to find out if Quan gets the future he deserves, take a ride with him in a rocket ship through this spectacular novel.
