Dinner and Crime

Karl felt both lonely and strangely liberated as he strolled down the street on a lovely spring evening. Hands stuffed in his pockets, and wife thankfully at least a days drive or more away. He did so love Simone, his new wife , but unfortunately not in the way she probably was hoping he did. See, he’d never told her that he was -- well, she wasn’t here now, which meant he could be as frisky as he wanted before he picked up the paintings he was actually here to fetch from an artist in the Evergreen state. It had taken a lot of negotiation to secure the piece, but Karl had a silver tongue and he was going to make a killing with it in their gallery.
Unfortunately for the socialite’s husband, someone else spotted the rich man in his stylish gray suit and well coiffed hair ( the rolex didn’t hurt either ) and he found himself being followed. Oh, it was subtle at first, just the sound of footsteps that were not his own behind him. But, as he quickened his pace, the footsteps quickened as well. And as Karl once again walked faster , he found himself tailed faster in pursuit.
“This is not the kind of attention I was hoping for” he muttered to himself as he looked up ahead for something to put distance between him and his stalker. Up ahead he saw a shop with a light on. Breaking out into a run, Karl was already out of breath , but would have made it if he didn’t trip on that blasted crack in the sidewalk and took a tumble, letting out a cry of pain as he twisted his ankle and the mugger closed in.
Karl could see the blade in his hand. “ Gimme your wallet and your watch. “ the mugger demanded.
Karl pursed his lips. “ You’re starting to sound like my wife “ he uttered , but that blade nicking his neck had Karl removing the rolex “ here you go. “ and then handing over his watch, followed by his wallet.
Thankfully, a good samaritan had witnessed the whole thing and called the cops!
