I was dreading it a little (nervoucitement) because it's been 4 months since I was in the saddle riding properly. The lesson I signed up for was intermediate jumping and I don't regret it a bit!
The team rotates horses for every lesson so you get a 'taste' of all different kinds of horses. My horse today was Jenny who turned out to be fantastic-- it was clear she loved her job (jumping, anyway, she seemed bored at flatwork...) and went at the jumps ears pricked and bouncy. She got a little head-heavy sometimes and if I let her have her head she'd drop it & buck so a lot of the work was trying to balance her. On the plus side, the time she did have a little fit made her extra bouncy and uphill to our jump, which was great! We only did 2'3" - 2'6" ish but it felt like a good re-starting point for me.
As for my eq, it's obviously not where it used to be. My lower leg is okay-ish but I really need to work on my sloppy-as-fuck releasing and general core stuff (but I guess that's to be expected being out of work for so long!). I got most of the distances but kept dropping my eye to the second fence in lines so I need to work on keeping head, chin, eyes up on a focus point through the line. Also need to work on keeping my shoulders back because I tend to slouch at the canter (??? why, Mia, why??) and getting comfortable with my ass in the saddle. The trainer was displeased with my "light American seat" (it's okay, half-seat, I'll return to you one day).
Interesting four or five stride line... the former hunter in me was screaming "go for the steady five!" but the trainer was screaming "push for the four!" so... I ended up getting an awkward five twice, until finally pushing through for a nice four the last time I jumped it. Gotta save that extra two seconds for a quick jumper round. :)
ANYWAY, I am ecstatic to be riding again and glad that I wasn't a complete mess, was able to sit through the occasional buck and didn't pull a rail! So woooo!
