Summary: You said you didn’t do footballers but for one specific footballer you would be willing to spend your midnight in Mexico City sneaking around with him.
thought i told you i don't do footballers, bellingham. was the text message you sent to professional footballer Jude Bellingham.
It was ironic that you kept on telling yourself and your brother that you wouldn't dare to fall in love with a footballer especially when you were just trying to survive vacation and get out of Mexico City.
You didn't expect him to reply so fast. Your phone glowed on the nightstand of your hotel room, you being rapid to open the message.
and yet here you are still messaging me, nice one.
The stupid text message on a screen made you smile, making you forget that you somewhat had a deep hatred for footballers. You didn't know what you were getting yourself into but it felt right... to you.
you're the one who gave me your phone number. let alone on a jersey i told you that was for my brother. the last thing i want is David finding out im texting frickin' jude bellingham.
You hated how you were checking your phone every second like it was a life or death situation if he didn't text you back quickly. You bit your thumbnail and stared at your phone.
''Oi! Dude, why do you look like you've just seen a ghost?'' David threw a pillow at you which nearly knocked you out, your hair covered your face as he snapped you out your trance.
It seemed like you had gone a lot of spiraling in two minutes to the point where you didn't even realize your brother had walked out of the bathroom.
''There's not a ghost living in our hotel room, right? I didn't think the hotel owner was legit about this building being like a hundred years old...'' David mumbled, touching his chin as he looked around the room.
''Yeah, there's a ghost up your ass.'' You snorted, turning on your phone to check if Jude texted you back.
yeah, i know i'm sorry. that was probably the worst way to give you my number. what'd you tell your brother when he saw it anyways?
Your face plastered on a cheeky smile as you stared at the text message that was soon broken by your brother clapping in your face.
''HELLO! Y/N! Are you under spells or something? Is the ghost hypnotizing you or something? Why are you smiling at your phone like a dork?'' David threw his hands up, eyebrows furrowing in curiosity.
''Damn it! Stop making it so obvious something's going on Y/N.'' You thought in your head before talking back to your brother.
''Nothing. My friends are the funniest in the world. You know my friends right? We have a whole group chat together. Selena, Rory, Emma, they ring a bell?'' You told David that you were texting your friends, using them as the excuse to why you look like your whole world was brightened up.
''Yeah, yeah. I know them. They used to bombard me for money to eat out... I still don't know why you let them search my stuff like that-'' He trailed off. ''Anyway, we have lots of exploring to do tomorrow, so get some sleep Y/N. My itinerary is filled to the brim! Love ya.'' David switched off the lamp on the nightstand, leaving you with the light glow of you and Jude's conversation.
i just told him it was a weird ass code you told me about that englanders only knew about, he ended up believing it lmfao
You sat against the headboard of your bed, the room filled with nothing with David falling into the deep seas of slumber and your steady breathing.
smart... lying to save a footballer's ass? so much for a girl who said she doesn't do footballers
His text appeared on your screen, you giggled slightly as you typed back.
shut up. what do you want anyways?
Texting back, you cleared your throat, the darkness of the room not being able to highlight the blush you could physically feel on your face.
nothing, just you meeting me at the store you told me you didn't do footballers at. tomorrow. 2pm.
Your breath hitched as you read his message. He wanted you to meet up with him somewhere. He was trying to make plans to see you.
You didn't know how to reply. You couldn't say no because your heart wanted to see him again but you couldn't say yes because what were you going to tell your brother? You were just casually going to meet the footballer you said you hated as soon as you got to Mexico City?
You typed. You deleted. You typed some more. You shook your hand as you deleted your text again. You took a deep breath and tried to focus on a stable sentence.
okay, but change the time to midnight. my brother will be asleep by then and i can just sneak out our hotel room, he cannot know i'm trying to see you
You couldn't believe the message you sent. Midnight? Sneaking out? You felt like a different person all of a sudden, you usually told your brother everything especially your boy problems but what was so different this time?
didn't see you as the secretive type. fine by me. don't stand me up, y/n.
Stand you up? Your eyebrows crinkled together, trying to figure out what he meant by that. Was he just teasing? Was he just trying to be funny? It wasn't a date so why would he see the secret meet up as that? You decided to send a final text and turn off your phone and your brain.
you don't know what i could do, bellingham.
Letting out a deep sigh, you plugged in your phone and dug yourself under the covers.
-
''Okay.. so cross out the itinerary for today.'' David said, opening the curtains to let the sun out and to wake you up.
It was around 8am in Mexico City and you were still in bed, soaking up the warmth of your blanket.
''Wha- why? You seemed so pumped about it.'' You questioned, squinting as the bright sun's light met your eye.
David put his socks on, sitting on the edge of your bed. ''I found out some of my old lads from college are here in Mexico City! They wanna play football at the local park here.''
''D, I don't wanna spend my morning watching you guys play football and being your guys's ref. I definitely don't want to see you guys freak out because you don't know whose point is whose because all of you weren't paying attention.'' You huffed, sitting up in your bed.
''I never said you had to come and watch or be our ref. You can go stroll around.. but within the park's distance. Maybe there's a bookstore nearby?''
''Thought you said you couldn't leave me alone by myself.''
''Yeah- well you're over the age of 21.''
''The last time I said that you said I was barely over the age of 21!''
''Be glad I'm giving you freedom this time, Y/N! Now hurry up and get dressed, you have like 15 minutes.''
''Bloody hell.'' You mumbled, grabbing your clothes and walking into the bathroom to get ready.
As you brushed your teeth, the soft ding came from your phone. You kept your toothbrush in your mouth for a moment to unlock your phone.
still on for tonight? just making sure you didn't forget.
It was a text from Jude. You sighed deeply, a spark lighting up in your chest as you read it. You set your phone on the bathroom counter and continued brushing your teeth.
After you had finished brushing your teeth, doing skincare, and getting dressed for the day, you finally had the chance to text Jude back.
surprisingly, for a girl who doesn't do footballers i didn't forget about tonight. you can relax.
You smiled to yourself as you press the send button on your phone. You forgot that you were in the bathroom of your hotel room and quickly walked out to see David sitting on his bed.
''Gosh! There you are, took you years to get ready.''
Slipping on your sandals, you looked at David and scoffed. ''Shut up, yeah? Be happy I'm even going with you.''
-
On your walk to the park, you had to painfully endure David's yap session about the England team and football in general. You wanted to smack him in the head as you heard him talking about some ''I can be a good player if they could just put me in the World Cup.''
''This is why I'm praying there's a bookstore nearby this park.'' You looked at him, sighing as you shook your head and walking faster than him.
Later, after a thousand steps, you and David finally made it to the park. Your brother's face lightened up when he saw his friends. You basically heard him cheer in excitement about fifty times before actually approaching them.
You looked around your surroundings to look for anything that could distract you with your time at this park.
The bright big sign that said ROSE BOOKSTORE caught your eye instantly. You smiled brightly acting as if you were your brother who had just seen his friends after forever.
You walked inside the small little building, a bell ringing above you. The comforting feeling settled in you, knowing you had the ability to stay in here forever if you had the time to. You quickly walked over to the romance section, not looking at the people around you in the building.
While you were having a blast looking at all the book covers and reading the backs of them to view the summaries, a well-known voice with a heavy accent adapted from England rang out behind you.
''Fancy seeing you here.''
''Wh- What the heck? Jude?''
''Didn't expect my morning spent bumping into a hater of football in the middle of a bookstore.'' He smiled, arms crossed against his chest. He had a baseball cap on which was a new look on him that you were growing fond of slowly as time currently passed.
''Yeah and I didn't expect to spend my morning bumping into a footballer.'' You chuckled, putting a romance book you took off its shelf back where it belonged. ''What brings you here?''
''Ah, trying to find a cookbook for mum. She's been collecting cookbooks from everywhere in the world so I thought it would be nice to save her the hassle and go explore for it myself.'' His eyes looked you up and down. ''And I'm glad I did. What brings you here?''
You sighed through your teeth, rocking back and forth on your feet. ''Uh, my brother's at the park with his friends he found out are in Mexico City at the same time as us.. they're playing football and I think you know well enough that I didn't wanna mope around near them and watch.'' You breathed, tilting your head.
You suddenly walked up to him and took his baseball cap off, adjusting it on your head. ''I didn't see you as a cap guy, I dig the look. I think the cap looks better on me than it does you, what do you think Bellingham?'' You teased him, hoping to get a sound of laughter out of him.
''Not bad, Y/N. Not bad.'' He chuckled, his smile turning into something softer and genuine. ''So about tonight, are you in the process of planning to make me wait like some secret agent?''
''Hm, depends if you're annoying.'' You adjusted the cap to fit your head better.
''Right.. so what else should I know about this mind of yours?'' His tone turned sincere with dashes of curiosity and wonder.
Your expression softened, you scoffed softly. ''I don't know Bellingham.'' You were silent for a second. ''Why do you wanna know so much about an ordinary like me?''
The question hangs in the air between the both of you. Jude's playful expression turns into something more serious as he thinks about his response.
Jude dug his hands into the pockets of his jeans, now leaning on a bookshelf. ''Because ordinary people don't tell me that free kicks aren't a big deal straight to my face and they don't steal my hat in a bookstore. Most people just see the jersey or the name... but you didn't. You just saw.. me. Didn't care about the whole football reputation.'' The confession hangs in the air like a thread as he continues. ''That's not ordinary. That's refreshing. You're not ordinary.''
The soft chatter of other people in the bookstore filled in the gap between and the quiet of the bookstore was different. The two shared a quiet moment where you were taken aback because of how genuine Jude sounded with his words. The comforting quiet was interrupted by a loud cough from someone aisles away.
''Well. On that note, I'm Y/N L/N. I'm 22 years old, I love reading anything but mostly romance, I'm a sucker for romcoms, I have a brother who is two years older than me, I love sweet treats more than any food in the world.'' You stuck out your hand in front of you for him to shake.
''Jude Bellingham, footballer, 23 years old, I have a younger brother who also plays football but he lives in Germany right now, and I'm not the best at choosing romcoms to watch so you will absolutely have to help with that.'' He shook your hand gently, smiling his view of you in his baseball cap.
''Footballer, huh? I didn't know that.'' You said, sarcastically, acting as if you didn't know that about him.
''Yeah, it's a little fact about me that isn't well-known.. what can I say? I'm a bit of a mysterious lad.'' He chuckled. ''It was nice meeting you Y/N L/N in a random bookstore located in Mexico City where you snatched my hat away to make it yours. Keep it.''
You laughed softly, fidgeting with your fingers. ''I should probably head back, I don't want my brother to call a whole search party because I was too busy talking to a footballer.'' You nodded. ''I'll see you later and I promise I won't stand you up.'' You bit your bottom lip, smiling as you slowly walked away from him and exited the bookstore.
-
11pm, the clock read. You were supposed to mean Jude in an hour and your anxiety was shooting through the roof, but obviously you couldn't give that impression off to your brother.
You were sitting on your bed, scrolling on your phone on Instagram and texting your friends back home... and Jude as you waited for your brother to stop talking about football and get ready for bed.
''You aren't gonna get ready for bed first?'' David said, walking over your bed and grabbing one of your pillows, throwing it around and being careful not to hit you.
''Nah, you can use the bathroom first. I like waiting til you're asleep to get ready, you rush me too much and judge my pajama choice.''
''Weird reason but okay...''
You peered over the bathroom door, waiting for the lock to click before exiting your group chat with your friends and pressing on Jude's contact.
he's taking forever to get into bed idk what's going on
You sighed, biting your thumbnail at the thought of David not sleeping in time. You haven't acted like this in years. ''DAVID! HURRY UP I KNOW YOU DON'T HAVE A TEN STEP SKINCARE ROUTINE!''
His voice called out from the bathroom as you started to look in your suitcase for outfit ideas, ''RELAX!''
Minutes passed and David finally walked out of the bathroom, clearly ready to hit the hay.
''Alright, night sis. I think our itinerary will be back in session for tomorrow.'' David climbed into bed, turning off the nightlight.
Now the only thing that was left was the pumping of your heart, you were convinced that it was going to jump out of your chest. In your defense, you were meeting up with a super famous footballer so it wasn't weird. You didn't have a crush on him or anything... right? But who were you fooling. The way your eyes lit up at the mention of him, the way you had a stupid smile when he texted you, the way he made you laugh so effortless through a screen and in person. You couldn't lie.
He had a charm.
11:30, the clock read.
Perfect, you knew your brother would be asleep in 30 minutes. The boy was a deep sleeper for God's sake and wouldn't wake up to the loud hotel room door creaking.
he just got into bed, see you in 30 :)
A smiley face? You never text anybody a smiley face unless they were your bestest of friends or in this case someone you grew fond of.
no rush, l/n.
Your lips formed into a smile before shaking your head and rolling your eyes in exhaustion. ''Get it together Y/N, gosh.'' You told yourself, looking at David's bed in the hazy darkness.
You felt stupid in a way and you felt like someone had indeed casted a spell on you. You were 22 and getting excited over someone that might just be a summer fling and you simply wouldn't see him again after vacation was over. There was no doubt that he was going to leave Mexico City soon. To be fair, England's match with Mexico already ended.
Quickly getting dressed you didn't put much thought into your outfit. It was just a plain shirt and baggy jeans, you slipped on your sneakers instead of wearing your sandals and successfully you were out the door without creating some disturbance for your brother.
Luckily, the store you and Jude were meeting up at was within walking distance with your hotel so you didn't have to worry about hitching a cab or something.
You walked slowly to the store until Jude came into your view, he was standing up, leaning on the wall on his phone.
''I didn't stand you up.'' You called out from in front of him.
''You really didn't.'' He seemed breathless which confused you because you weren't dressed up in anything fancy.
''You're staring.''
''I know.''
''If you're just gonna spend your time staring at me like you have a crush on me, you're wasting your time, Bellingham.''
''Accusations, accusations.'' He scoffed, a playful smile meeting his lips. He slipped next to you, both of you guys walking side by side as he puts his arm over your shoulder. ''There's an ice cream shop nearby. We could try it out if you want. I remember you saying you have a sweet tooth earlier.''
Holding his wrist of the arm that was on your shoulder to steady yourself, you looked up at him, smiling. ''You were paying attention? Looks like you aren't stuck-up after all...''
Turning the corner, his arm still around you, his glance flickered from you and the pavement in front of him from time to time. ''Yeah, well when a girl like you's introducing herself formally, I want to pay attention.''
You couldn't really miss the building. The vibrant lights of the ice cream shop made it pop out in the middle of the night, you were surprised out of everything an ice cream shop was opened at this time of day. ''They're still open?''
''You never know, some people could be in distress for ice cream late at night. Ice cream's on me, what's your go-to?''
''Strawberry. Always.'' You shrugged. ''I like how pink it is. Like- it's always the perfect shade of pink and I love how it's fruity but also creamy at the same time.''
Jude smirked, staring at you like you were the only girl in the world that mattered. All of the girls he's seen at his former football games, screaming his name and wearing his jersey for his attention were all wiped out from his mind just by looking at you.
''Touché. I'll just have vanilla.''
''Vanilla? It's good but it's the most boring flavor in my book of ice cream flavors ever.''
''Yeah but vanilla and strawberry go together. They compliment each other in way, you know?''
Your eyes met his, ''Are you implying something Jude?''
''ORDER WHEN YOU ARE READY!''
Jude ordered quickly, handing you your ice cream in a cup and grabbing two spoons for you and him.
The rest of the ice cream session passes in a comfortable easy rhythm. Each of you finish your ice creams, sharing funny stories. Jude tells a few terrible football jokes that somehow make you laugh and you share a moment where you tried baking a football shaped cake for David but it didn't turn out the way you wanted to.
''We should probably get going. Getting late.'' Jude threw away your guys's trash.
The night air is cool and fresh as you two step outside the ice cream shop. Completely oblivious as you admired the view, looking away from Jude's face the soft melody of ''Can't Help Falling in Love'' by Elvis Presley drifts out from the shop's speakers. You seem lost in thought, gazing down the lit street and completely unaware of the song's romantic timing.
Jude listened for a moment, his gaze glued onto you. ''You know.. this song.'' He shoved his hands into his pockets, rocking back and forth on his feet. ''It's a bit on the nose, isn't it? For a secret ice cream treat late at night.''
''Hm?'' You turned to look at him. Your expression blank before registering the song in your mind properly. Jude seemed nervous from your point of view and you thought it was cute.
''It's like the universe is trying to set a mood. A really obvious mood.'' He continued, staying by your side.
The street is wide open and empty for the two of you, the music setting the mood as if it was a scene pulled out from one of your romcoms would always binge-watched.
''Trying to say something?''
Jude hummed, tilting his head slightly. ''I'm trying to say that I had a good time. And maybe this doesn't have to be a secret much longer.'' He gestures with his chin down the quiet street. ''Come on, I'll walk you back to your hotel.''
''Dance with me, Jude.''
You stopped him, leaving him in his tracks as he slowly turned his head towards you. The request lingers in the air, simple and bold.
''You kept talking about the song and it seems like you're in a dancing mood so...''
Jude stepped closer, offering his hand. ''When you put it like that, how could I say no?'' He took your hand gently, his other hand finding its place on your waist. You both begin to sway slowly on the pavement.
''Not so bad for a footballer, am I?'' He said quietly.
''Amateur.''
''Amateur, maybe. But I'm a quick learner.'' His voice soft, close to your ear.
Jude's steps are sure and steady, leading effortlessly as you two turn a slow circle, the world pausing on its spinning.
''How do you handle being famous?'' Your voice whispered, genuinely wanting to know more about his life.
Jude sighed softly, still swaying and holding onto your waist. ''It's.. a lot. Sometimes it's amazing, the support. Other times it feels like you're living in a box.'' He pulled back just enough to look at you. ''You get used to the noise but you never really get used to people feeling like they own a piece of you.'' Jude smiles. ''That's why nights like this.. dancing on the street, ice cream in private- they mean more than you think.''
You went silent for a moment, followed by you resting your head on his chest but her arms still loosely wrapped around his neck. You both stand there for a long moment, not really dancing anymore but just swaying gently on the street. Jude rests his chin on the top of your head, squeezing your waist in reassurance.
''You're quiet.''
''Can't a girl be quiet?''
''You can. I just hope it's a good quiet.''
''It is... Just don't overthink it.''
Eventually, Jude loosens his grip slightly, pulling back.
''Let's get you back to the hotel, yeah? Don't want your brother waking up randomly and realizing you're gone.''
''Yeah, he's gonna freak knowing his little sister who could care less about football was out with Jude Bellingham.''
Jude grinned. ''Little sister who could care less about football, huh? I think that's an understatement now.''
''Yeah, yeah. Don't think we're something, Bellingham.''
He laughed softly as you and him started walking slowly back toward your hotel, ''Oh, I wouldn't dare. We're just two people who happened to find the same quiet street.''
You walked side by side through the quiet Mexico City streets, the comfortable silence from the shared dance lingering between you two. The hotel comes into view, lights glowing softly.
''Alright, this is my stop. Don't want people recognizing me and starting rumors.'' Jude stopped at a respectful distance from the entrance. ''I had a really good time tonight, Y/N. More than I expected.''
''I did too, Jude. You're not all awful and I mean it.'' You smiled, kissing his cheek softly by getting on your tippy toes, continued by walking away towards the hotel entrance.
Jude stayed in his spot, frozen for a moment, then calling out to you softly. ''Hey, L/N? Try not to steal other footballers and their numbers.''
''Wouldn't dream of it, Bellingham.''
