Ohhhh god Riptide 81.
Was it cathartic to see Chip finally break down fully? Yes. It was. But what stuck with me more than anything was Jay.
She loves Chip and Gillion so much. That’s nothing new, but seeing that part of her flayed open was brutal to watch. Jay is the one who tends to have her shit the most together. Smart, stoic, (comparably) sane. And yet. Faced with the prospect of not only never seeing Gill again but maybe losing Chip, she folded HARD.
Deep down, Jay is just as scared and desperate and codependent as everyone else on that boat. She’s lost everything else, after all. Carving Chip’s graffiti back into the hull because that idiot and his stupid obnoxious front are as much a part of her home as the ship itself…Assuming the role of the optimist because Chip is faltering, Gillion isn’t there to do it and she needs the Riptide Pirates back more than anything…Jay sold her metaphorical soul, her free will and the safety of everyone else around her to Niklaus goddamn Hendrix with only a caveat protecting her co-captains because those boys are her family. Any given member of the trio would have probably done the same. The way these three have latched on to each other needs to be studied in a lab
