BE LIKE SPONGEBOB
hes like 30 and still being his silly-whimsical-self!
almost exactly six months ago, in early spring of this year, i was going to a phlebotomy appointment (blood draw for hrt) and the nurse was talking to me to distract me. i can't remember why, but she asked me what i was doing to get where i wanted to be-- i told her that i would be a conservation scientist for rivers and waterways, but that i wasn't in school for it. (at the time, i was coming out of a pretty intense depression and anxiety breakdown. i was unemployed, had near constant body pain, and was fairly certain that i would never be able to afford college as a young adult, despite wanting desperately to go.)
this nurse looked me dead in the eye while putting the tourniquet on and asked me "well why aren't you in school for that, honey? even if all you can afford is one class, you need to be in that one class. the only thing that can stop you is yourself. my daughter got financial aid at the community college, and now she's a doctor at twenty six. nobody's gonna tell you that you can't. you need to be there."
it's important to note-- while she's doing this, she's drawing my blood with a truly breakneck efficiency. i go to multiple blood draws a year and have never seen someone this fast in my life, while giving me a pep talk with all the force and assurance of a general-- all i could do was nod along and say "yes, ma'am". i didn't even have time to get dizzy. as she's bandaging my arm, she looks me dead in the eyes and points at me with the hand that isn't wrapping the bandage. "next time you're in here, the only thing i had better hear out of your mouth is 'i'm enrolled in classes and i filled out my financial aid to work in riverways'. the world needs what you've got, and only you can give it. don't be selfish and keep yourself from giving what you've got."
and then i was sent on my merry way, blinking into the sunlight and utterly stunned by what had just happened. she was so forceful, so devastatingly competent that the literal only thing i could do was go home, go online, and start looking into aquatic conservation programs. it was the most forceful encouragement i have ever received in my life to date, as well as being such a direct and perfectly timed wake up call that it sounds unbelievably fake! this happened to me!! a real life woman said these things to me!!! and you know what?
today, i finished my freshman orientation for community college, with full financial aid and grants. i'm going into the aquatic sciences :) she genuinely changed the trajectory of my life for the better. she probably doesn't remember me, but i remember her. how wonderful that we can affect other people's lives like this!!
I pinky promise you that when you start believing in magic and things that people say are impossible life gets SO much more fun
