To Die For premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on 20 May 1995 before wider release in September.

Buck Henry adapted Joyce Maynard's 1992 novel (which was loosely based on 22-year-old Pamela Smart's conspiring with 15-year-old Billy Flynn to murder her husband) and Gus Van Sant was brought on to direct. The studio offer the part (and $5 million) to Meg Ryan, but she turned it down and Nicole Kidman was cast (for $2 million). 20-year-old Joaquin Phoenix was cast as the underage murderer.

There was something comforting about all that driving. Put a person in a car with a full tank of gas, give her a road map, and never mind if she can’t think of one hopeful thing to look forward to. She can listen to the radio and keep driving.

With Saturday Night currently in theaters, we are revisiting the films of Jason Reitman for one of his biggest flops. Adapted from the novel by Joyce Maynard, 2013's Labor Day casts Kate Winslet as a grieving mother who falls in love with the escaped convict (played by Josh Brolin) who hides out in her and her son's home. The melodrama was something of a creative pivot for Reitman, but received poor reviews at festivals before stumbling towards a qualifying release. A Golden Globe nomination for Winslet was the end of the awards road for the film.
